I totally disagree. If I want to motivate my team I'm telling them that they got beat by a team that was better that night and they need to play better if they want to win night in and night out. Why build in an external excuse for them if they got beat? Losses do a better job of getting a team's attention if they know they weren't good enough to win rather than they played fine and it was stolen from them.

Coaches know their team. I think especially at the top of the game there can be value in deflecting a loss on to the refs. I’ve been there, whether true or not, feeling like you’ve been screwed over by the refs in a tight game can absolutely gel a team. It’s game to game and team by team though, we win by 10 and Kelvin probably has a different response.

For a team like Houston, with their aspirations and recent history, with an established identity and style, and a pretty “old” team it’s a machine. They might need something outside of the machine to get them going.

Then Kelvin has had the same team for decades. He has always been an asshat like this since he was at Oklahoma. Couldn't stand him then and I can't stand him now.

You may as well change the names for Lipsey and Rob Jones. They are such different offensive players this year that it's not a good comparison. It's a lot more than Tamin shooting, which on its own is massive for the entire offense and spacing. He was making good decisions last year. This year he is attacking and making plays at another level.

And Rob being competent at the line and scoring around the basket are the obvious things, but he has become drastically better when they run the high post stuff through him. Of all the guys on last years roster and this years roster, Gilbert, MM, and Soph. Lipsey are the three best offensive players. Holmes and Gabe were asked to do more than they should've offensively, but we really didn't have a choice. They did a great job with what they were asked to do, and were absolute bulldogs, but they just weren't consistent, efficient offensive guys.

And I get people pulling their hair out a bit with Gilbert at times, but man, he is a special blend of quickness and motor/effort.
Maybe my concerns are premature and should let it play out more, just struggle with the long droughts of not scoring. We have seen it a couple times already this year and Big12 is going to be really tough from scoring standpoint.

Thats fair, but can’t really argue with his results. He knows what he’s doing whether anyone likes him or his demeanor or not.

Cryer had been awesome this year - prior to last night. He had 9 turnovers in 14 games before we forced him into 3 last night. And he's scoring 17ppg on 40% 3pt shooting at 87% from the line.

He is good no doubt.....but with the press they get by comparison to say, Oklahomas'a back court....I think OU's is just as good or better.

A fun note on the offense from last night:

Barttorvik had the unadjusted offensive efficiency at 91.1 last night, the worst of the season. But adjusting for the opponent, the adjusted offensive efficiency was 116.9, which would rank 23rd in the country. Houston's defense is that good...

Even after last night, Houston's defense is still #1 in adjusted defensive efficiency, effective field goal percentage (#3 in 3-point field goal percentage and #1 in 2-point field goal percentage), #1 in turnover percentage, and #1 in blocks.

It might turn out to be a huge improvement from last season, we will see. I don't disagree we upgraded talent wise on the offensive side, but how much is still the question.

We've played 15 games. The regular season is 31. Half the data has come in.

And the results are very clear -- this is a much improved offensive team.

It's went from one of the worst P6 offenses to merely a slightly-below average one.

Which, combined with a defense that has taken no steps back... well, it's very dangerous.

I guarantee NBA scouts are following Tamin now as more than just a fringe possibility like he'd have been last year. Not saying he's a leave early kind of guy, but his strength, rebounding and defense negate his height somewhat if he can keep improving as a shooter and playmaker. He's definitely on the radar now.

The pass he threw over his head from his butt on the floor last night is kind of being overlooked as a "play of the game" because it came early and Milan's 3 was such a highlight.

Houston's #s didn't really drop on KenPom either after the game which says something about ISU and Hilton statistically too.

This is completely random, but does anyone here know Thom McDonald the commissioner of Iowa Junior college athletics? My friend was given tickets from a friend who was a big Houston fan last night and they were directly behind the Houston bench. As soon as we sat down we had the privilege to sit next to this gem. His first words to us were are you guys ISU fans. We said yes, and he goes on to say you guys won’t have “sh@t to cheer about tonight”. Five minutes into the game he goes on a rant about how he paid for these tickets and we deserve to be in the balcony where the poor people sit. And how he will get us kicked out of her sooner than it took us to sit down. Mind you we werent being arrogant or disrespectful whatsoever. Then Kelvin Sampson daughter comes up to my friend telling us to leave these aren’t your seats and makes a scene. The more I learned about Thom the guy is an ISU graduate. I’ve never in my 33 years of life met a more entitled POS in my entire life. Sorry for the rant, but I had to put this out there. I was in complete shock with how a guy that is the commissioner of Iowa Junior college athletics treated my friend and I and could care less that he was doing it.

was this him?

Right now Timin is a G league player, no way he makes a roster, but he has 2 years to improve his shortcomings. He needs to be a threat shooting the ball, he is not there yet.

And guess what kids?

ISU could hit a groove like we all dream of and get beat in the tourney by 1 PM CST Thursday.

Ain't it grand?

Yeah, we just saw that playing the best defense in the nation and we won shooting poorly. Sure we shot 10 more FTs but the numbers don't show the full story. Bob shot two extra FTs because of the flagrant foul and Milan was put to the line in the final seconds. So is shooting 6 more FTs that crazy? Absolutely not. Houston also shot 11 more threes than us, which is a credit to our defense for packing it in tight and not forcing them to take deep tough threes.

Best thing about making the tourney every year and getting bounced in round 1 once in awhile is that the odds of that happening again the next year have to go down by a lot.

He's shooting 40% from beyond the arc and has taken the third most threes on the team. I'd say he's definitely a threat shooting the ball.
