Longest song...

Right off the top of my head I was thinking "In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida" by Iron Butterfly but I think that there are some that are even longer than that one.
Longest song...

A song that I know that is pretty long is "Fall of Pangea" by Valient Thorr which is 36 Minutes long.
The longest song I know of is "six degrees of inner turbulence" by Dream Theater… It goes for 42 minutes and I cant remember how many seconds, but yeah it's a really good song.
The longest song I actually have in my library would be Somnium by Robert Rich which is about 7 hours long. However the longest song I can think of is Longplayer, a 1000 year long piece of music which started to play on the 1st January 2000 and will continue to play, without repetition, until the 31st December 2999, when it will come back to the point at which it began - and begin again.
Longest song...

The longest - and most boring - musical piece ever "composed" (if the word fits here) is, in all likelihood, a piece for Organ called »Organ2/ASLSP« (As Slow(ly) and Soft(ly) as Possible), conceived by American composer/artist John Cage (1912-1992). An organist shows up at the St. Buchardi Church in Halberstadt, Germany to play a single, lasting note and leaves, to return again the next year and play the note that follows. The piece ends after 639 years, on September 4, 2640.
Longest song!!

The longest song has to be Chew and Hiccup by Book Oven. The song is 240 minutes longs (6 hours) not a famous band but thats the longest song.
Actual Longest song...

The actual longest song ever recorded would of music Longplayer
If you look back in history the longest preforming son that was ever composed was Homers oddesy, That could be disputed to be a poem but there is a tune to it that you can find with considorable digging on the internet.
Not the Longest, But a Long One

Since there have already been some answers, of which a few I do not consider actual songs myself, such as that organ song...I have a song to offer: Thick as a Brick by Jethro Tull. The song is 43 minutes and 36 seconds. As well the questions asks for "recorded." That longplayer and organ stuff cannot be constituted as an appropriate answer, for they are being recorded or are still in progress. Either way, they cannot count. ~Npjpkac

Over seven minutes in length, "Hey Jude" was at the time the longest single ever to top the British charts. "Hey Jude" is a song by the English rock band The Beatles that was recorded in 1968. get download songs here Download MP3 Music. Westsounds.com Online MP3 Music Store
Another long song would be the full version of "2112" by Rush. It is 20 minutes, 31 seconds. It is from the album 2112, and is split into 7 parts. These seven parts are called: Overture, The Temple of Syrinx, Discovery, Presentation, Oracle: The Dream, Solilquy, and The Grand Finale.

>Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts I-IX) is about 26 minutes
I don't know if it is officially classified as a song, But Mike Oldfields Tubular Bells comes in at 43 minutes.

Beethoven's 9th

not the longest but the recording i have is 1hr and 3 min.

LONGPLAYER - January 1st 2000 - December 31st 2999

I know people have already put their answers but if you Google "World's longest song" the first result should say " Digg - Longplayer, the world's longest song." If you click that web page you will see that Long player started playing on January 1st 2000 and will end without repetition until December 31st 2999.

Sleep - Dopesmoker
Seeing as the question asks specifically for recorded material, I don't think Longplayer counts, as it's not recorded yet, as has been pointed out already.
The longest song I know of, which may not be the longest one, is Sleep's Dopesmoker, standing at 63:31. Sleep is a Stoner Doom Metal band, and their previous album was originally a single song also over 1h, which then was reduced to 52:08. Against the band's wishes, it was then split into 6 tracks. Dopesmoker is a single track though and, as far as I know, is the longest single track ever recorded.

Fantômas - Surgical Sound Specimens From the Museum of Skin Just to add that, after some researching, I found that Fantômas song Surgical Sound Specimens From the Museum of Skin has a total of 74:17.

I'll bet a live version of dazed and confused can get pretty long.
