According to Paul Clark at www.cyclonereport.com, Iowa State football coach Gene Chizik has picked up another verbal commitment. Joe King is a 6'6, 297 pound offensive tackle from Oklahoma City. King moves well, running a 4.9 40. King picked Iowa State over Texas Tech.

Joe King is a great pickup, but good lord we need help on the defensive side of the ball. Especially with guys that can create a pass rush. Hoping that most of the last guys in this class are defensive guys.

So it is Joe King ehh? He is a good pick up, but I was also hoping it was a defensive guy. Maybe we got a 4* and kings news will come out later? haha might as well think positively.

Really good get! If it is true that Edwards will be a DL, which is what his mom is saying supposedly, than this was still a big need. Now we have two very solid recruits on the O-Line and Tuftee and add Bykowski to the mix most likely on top of those guys. I would say with the last four or so commitments we need at least one more DB, one more LB, one DE and a RB. If we go for 26 add another K!

I'm getting the feeling all of our DL recruits are going to be listed as another position and built into DLinemen. Hopefully we can convert some gems.

We all know a good offense begins with a solid o-line. I'm very psyched to see King and Grant on board. These guys are Big 12 size linemen.

We've seen that many, many times here at ISU.....I just wondered if we did it out of necessity or if everyone does it that way.

Not only the size, but, its not just weight to be close to 300 pounds....these guys are athletic big men....i love the fact that we build from the OL, because we have no offense without a solid line...

And for all of us that remember the EIU team that ferentz took and got whipped on New Years Day bowl against USC, Brad Banks wasnt the second best collegiate player in the nation, he had an offensive line that dominated.....Banks was simply a role player, and a good one.....You put a very good-great qb behind a great line, suddenly you have something.....

Love the size and athletic builds of our new lineman...under shep these guys will provide us a lot of enjoyable victories over EIU, beat them at their own game....besides its our super bowl, we have to win it!!!!!

Agreed! But that is how it works, you build S to LB, LB to DE, DE to DT! Sometimes TE to DL, often TE to OL!

Very true, the only one i have a problem with right now, is with converting a TE to a DL.....a tight end just does not have the physical size to make plays in our conference on a consistant basis. For us right now Parker is undersized and when big 12 opponents run at him, he gets manhandled.....

The DE spot needs guys like the one we lost....DJ Marshall was a huge loss....he really looks the part of a DE.....If you make a DE into a DT, okay, similar in size and you have a more athletic player inside.

My prediction...we havent recruited the LB position very hard...

We've converted Cameron Bell and my guess is so will AJ Mathews....i think he could get switched to WILL linebacker....he's 6-3 202 on the roster, and 4.73 speed...not sure the speed is something that works in our favor at DB....

Just some thoughts....I think the staff is taking a great approach that they will redshirt as many players as possible to get them sized right for the job.....give them to shep, take off the baby fat and turn it into muscle and ready to withstand the big 12 play.......

I think a lot of teams do a bit of it, the key is to have someone with the game speed that they can keep up if they add some weight. The problem with some of our guys in the past was that they were undersized and we were playing them on the line. Tyson Smith was never a good size for a DE, Berryman was just barely, but he was great. I think the best move is TE to OL, look how successful the squawkeyes have been doing that one. They work but size is a key factor, we can't be moving guys out of necessity if they are undersized!

KMAC, you have to remember that LB was our most heavily recruited position last year! We have Bell, Matthews, Mathis and Green. Add Ferguson in there for next year and I really feel pretty good about what we have. We have a young crew of LB's! The only senior this year will be Bibbs, other than that we have Smith, Garrin, Raven and the guys I mentioned. I think we could use one more guy at LB, but it isn't a huge need! Also one guy that could potentially be a DE is Chase Harper at 6-5 220 and 4.56 speed. He might be a killer TE prospect but he would also have the potential to be built into a killer DE!

If Joe King is the commit then I think we might be done with the OL. It has been mentioned that Jared Edwards has really been slated for a DE position. Haughton, if he makes grades will be a possible switch to DT. I really hope we get after Antonio Bell who is a WR-DB possibility who is 6-2 and weighs about 180 with 4.5 speed. I like Anthony Lewis who has good size and 4.5 speed at the MLB position. Plus I want to get another DT or two.

I am really enthused about our recruiting. It seems we are filling in with quality recruits rather than falling back on sleepers and question marks.

Iowa has a freshman TE recruit last year that changed to DE, and he looked pretty dang good to me.

Agreed, what I really like is the speed in the trenches. Yes average speed might be nearly equal but this is where I notice the difference. O Line!
Joe King 4.9
David Grant 5.0
Adrin Haughton 4.9
Ethan Tuftee 5.08

Mac Guys
Lee Tibbs 5.2
Jose Vargas 5.4
Reggie Stephens 5.2
Jordan Goos 5.5
Kody Kuehl 5.3
Landon Streit 5.12
Joe Vanstrom 5.35

RIGHT ON - EVERYTHING YOU SAID!!!!

Just hope that AJ Mathews plays faster then 4.73 because we need speed on the D and especially at safety, because if our db's cannot cover better, our safety's will have to track down a lot of guys.....
