Between the Ames 5-0 and the campus cops, you would be lucky to get out of Ames without some sort of citation-- I'm surprised to hear from you they were 'lenient'.

Eh, I went to ISU for 5 years (w/ co-op) and have lived in Ames for 5 years and have yet to get a ticket; same goes for my wife. I think the key is to not park illegally...and have a motorcycle to ride on to campus every day.

At one point I carried around a ticket and when I parked, I'd just slap it on my windshield like I already got one. Worked a couple of times, but I think they caught on to it.

I will say one of my greater joys was getting to the meter with a minute left and leaving while the meter reader looked depressed because they thought they'd get to give a ticket.

City is no better. I parked in our driveway once and my roommate wasn't pulled up far enough to get my backend off the sidewalk. Left it running and went inside, yelled for him to move his car up, came back out and there the dude was writing me a ticket while parked on Lincoln Way almost causing accidents.
I told him I just walked in and out and was about to move it.
"Sorry, I already entered it in."
So, as he drove away I crumpled it up and threw it in the back of his truck. A couple years later, I was arrested for non-payment of that ticket.

so on every job app or driver's license renewal on the section where it asks if you have ever been arrested, you get to say: I refused to pay a bull **** ticket and they nabbed me.

wow

Is it my imagination or are the campus police really gung ho about giving out parking tickets. James got several and i got one when we could not park on the grass and i thought i was legally parked but got a ticket when they told us they would be lenient because of the parking issues. Just wondering??

Definitely not your imagination. They are crazy about parking tickets. I'd hate to guess how much money I wasted on them.

Unfortunately, Ames is notorious for its, shall I say, "unfriendly" parking enforcement.

I've told this story before on here, but once I was watching TV and heard some rustling outside. I go out there and find a parking cop writing a ticket for my car, which is parked in its own driveway. Cop says,"Your car is 1" on the grass." I was like WTH? I'm parked in my own driveway. He let me move it, but just an example of how they go looking for it.
I've gotten an ames ticket before for parking on an apartment's private property.

Vital revenue stream to keep a bloated operation at full bloat. ISU DPS has "little man's syndrome." They want to be big boy police but they're not.

They really hate it when you tell them there not real cops. I told that to one who pulled me over leaving the Rec for no seat belt (it was literally the first time in a year I hadn't wore one but I was a ball of sweat and didn't want to get the belt all sweaty). He threatened to arrest me when I made fun of him for being a fake cop, I told him I doubt he had the authority to arrest me and that if a DPS officer hauled me to jail for a seat belt ticket all of the real cops would give him crap about it for the rest of his career. I am pretty sure though that he actually lacked the authority to arrest me.

yep the old ticket on the windshield worked for awhile, but they eventually caught onto it.

This.

I got a couple tickets when I first started school, but then I did some in depth research, and through much experimentation and trial and error, I figured out that if I parked legally, the number of tickets I received dropped dramatically. It's a novel concept, I know, and certainly still in the "theory" stage at this point, but there is no denying that there is a correlation on some level.

Good theory! I think the problem is, unless you are parked in your driveway, you are probably parked illegally in Ames.

I heard about someone who would do this with a K-mart receipt. They finally looked and not only did he get a ticket he got written up for FRAUD. Talk about TRULY RELENTLESS D-BAGs.

I parked honestly my entire time at ISU, and the only time I ever got a ticket was when I was dropping my girlfriend off at her dorm after picking up some food at the grocery store. It was the middle of winter, so I found a quick parking spot, and helped her run some of her bags up to her room.

I got back to my car not 5 minutes later, and there was a ticket waiting for me. DPS must hire ninjas to hand out tickets, because there wasn't a patrol vehicle in sight.

Granted, I did get my car towed from the stadium lots once, only because I forgot to move my car for game day. What a pain it was to get that one back.

Are you talking about the guys who write tickets, or the ISU police? Because I can assure you that the police are in fact real cops.

My biggest complaint wasnt even the level of enforcement.. it was the rules on the parking lots themselves. Lots need to start opening up to regular parking around 3, not 5, as those lots sit empty as most classes are over. Save some spots up front, for those with a parking pass that need them (you could make the front row red until 3, and then yellow until 5) , but there is no reason you should get a ticket for having your car in an empty parking lot.

Almost all of my tickets were in the parking lot west of howe, next to where the marching band field used to be. The lot would have tons of empty spots, yet sometimes DPS would decide itd be a great idea to tag all the marching band kids that'd parked there.

Last year, this ****** would sit in his dps truck and wait for practice to start, then he'd walk around and ticket every single car. I'm pretty sure the entire band hated him.

You have to be a tool of the greatest degree to be employed by the parking police.

any college campus not just Iowa state is stiff on parking. I dont bother driving my car anywhere in Iowa City, and the last two times ive gone to ames to visit my friends i park on a side street, and i still get a ticket. Even though theres no where that says no parking or meters, pretty stupid.

Maybe ISU should take some of those millions in parking fines, that show obvious demand for more parking, and put up some more parking decks around campus.
