You don't have that vocal of a negative minority unless you have a good fanbase. People don't spend that much energy on venting their frustrations if they don't care about the program. The difference our angry message boarders and a team like Michigan, is that their angry fans probably jumped on board when the Wolverines seemed like a sure thing to be successful forever. Iowa State fans on the other hand, from the biggest sunshine-pumper to the most bitter poster on fanatic, are all united in just the idea that eventually something good is going to happen for this program. The fact that we have this large of a fanbase based just on that, it is pretty incredible.

We also have a fantastic message board to post on thanks to CW and his crew. Props to them.
A board like HN would have been quarantined for a week after a few losses.

I agree with this. My gf is a Nebraska fan (yeah, I know its something I had to get over) her family always likes to take shots at ISU: JTS/ losses to FCS teams etc.

Remind them that

a) Nebraska's last two games vs. ISU were a two-point loss to ISU in Memorial Stadium, and a one point overtime win for Nebraska. And then remind them that these games were not in the Callahan era, these were Pelini-coached games.

b) Nebraska didn't leave the Big XII because of profit sharing, recruiting, or any of those other reasons. They left because they couldn't beat Texas. Period.

c) The B1G is horrible, and Nebraska still hasn't won a conference title. And they'll probably find a way to screw it up again this year. If they were still in the Big XII, they would be a middle of the pack team - and yes, would occasionally have losses to ISU.

d) Nebraska fans are the only people who call Nebraska fans the best fans in college football. Everyone else calls them the most obnoxious fans in college football. If they give you crap about ISU failures, remind them to stay classy.

I grew up in Nebraska, so I have a little credibility in making these statements. After taking a step outside of the fanbase, you really see how delusional they are.

I agree with this. My gf is a Nebraska fan (yeah, I know its something I had to get over) her family always likes to take shots at ISU: JTS/ losses to FCS teams etc. I always rebuttle with the argument of compare Iowa and Nebraska. Nebraska has one major university in the entire state. Iowa has 2 heck you could count UNI as a major university as well. This means you have to compete for your fans. Compete with Iowa to the east, UNI to the east, and Nebraska to the west. Factor in that ISU has little to no history in football and are coming off a 3 win season and most teams would be lucky for 30,000 fans show up.

Other teams can mock the team/facilities all they want but as soon as they start calling out our fans that crosses the line and I unleash hell. If I was CPR/Pollard I would be thanking the ISU fans weekly that they still have jobs because anywhere else these results wouldn't allow us to expand the south end zone and FREAKING INCREASE CAPACITY!!!

Couple things;

1. The only "major" university in the state of Nebraska is in Omaha and it's called Creighton.

2. You shouldn't be conversing with a UNL fan or "graduate" regarding anything except to tip for a pizza delivery or to indicate that you "want fries with that"...it's beneath you.

Why can't we recruit better talent in light of the great fan base? Makes me wonder what the coaches are selling to the kids when they are on the road recruiting. Yes, we are great fans but we also deserve better. Is CPR the guy to lead this program on the field well that is what the A.D. gets paid for, but on the other hand if we can't get talent to come to Ames well then from my perspective that is on CPR since the fans are here through thick and thin. We were totally outmatched against BU re talent and unless we upgrade the talent level we are going to remain in the bottom of the conference!

You should absolutely know better than to use the internet as a true measuring stick to gauge a fan base. Instead, read what the OP said. Most of us haven't witnessed a home victory in 2 years. 2 years, guy. We continue to show-up like we're a top 25 team, however. We're a proud bunch that, regardless of how bad we seem to be, loves our team. The attendance numbers don't lie.

This is why I think Jamie will not mess with our tailgating scene and even fight outside forces to keep it as close to what it already is as possible. When ISU is down people still come to tailgate, but some will stay out of the stadium or leave early if the Cyclones are overmatched. It is regrettable, but the reality is that those fans still are in the habit of being in Ames on gameday so it doesn't take much to get them back in the stadium or keep them in the stadium. I know when I was in college there wasn't much beyond the tailgating to come out for, but people kept coming; not in today's numbers but better than the product alone warranted.

Jamie is shrewd and he knows better than to mess with the one constant in Cyclone football gamedays. It is the security blanket for when things are the bleakest.

If fan loyalty sold recruits, we'd have no trouble.
Winning and tradition sell a school to recruits.

Are you serious? Did you just start following Iowa State football? ISU fans haven't always been so supportive of the football program. There is a big reason they have been the last few years and it isn't the tailgating scene or the level of talent. I don't get why people can't figure this out.

"Thank you. Sometimes on here however, I don't think we have the greatest fans...."

Yep, I think giving people the power of anonymity can really be dangerous to intelligence and respect.
