This doozie about Great Plains nearly gave me a heart attack. Like yelling fire in a theater.

I miss Battles, Home Team Pizza and the old Wallabies. New one is nice, but doesn't have the bloomin onion thing. I lived on Dotson my last year, which was a skip from Wallabies and the Keg Shop.
Also miss Rocky Rococo Pizza on Welch. Great place to grab a slice.
Also, the hot dog / gyro guy that had a cart on Welch. I think that whole thing blossomed since, but back in the early 90's, it was him. Always wanted to make sure you had a buck or two for after bar snacks.
The new Wallabies also dropped the calamari from the menu. Booooo!!!

I don't know why but we'd often do La Fuente before my shift at the bar on Fridays. So damn good but why did I always stuff myself with mexican food before drinking all night. That was a bold strategy.

Damn it....now I really want La Fuente.

They ended the Margarita Challenge, then closed. coincidence?

I have a drawer full of stupid college shirts, I should bust out my "I survived the Margarita Challenge". Others shirts included: You Pack, We Move (move in day help in dorms), I agree with Dave (I didn't but thought it was funny), VEISHEA was a Riot, It's OK with me, and countless home-made intramural team shirts.

Donutland.

They were open all night and we would go there about 1 Am and get a dozen Rasberry filled sugar donuts. YUMMMM

Gotta nasty gash in my head that required 20 stitches after a house party one night. It was bleeding like a stuck pig and my buds were hauling me to Mary Greeley and all I wanted to do was to go to Donutland!! I was pissed, drunk, hungry, and bleeding all at the same time.

I miss the old drive in movie theatre. Also, as a kid Hardees was at the Mall. They had this helicopter table you could eat at.

Let's see - can't forget Ruttles or The Garden Cafe.

I LOVED The Garden Cafe! It was so tasty!

There was a Chinese restaurant on Welch Avenue across from the Subway. I can't remember the name of it. They had some of the best fried shrimp dishes. I was never a fan of Chinese food before I went there and most Chinese since has been a disappointment in comparison.

Anyone remember the name of it?

Ah, Cocost, They had those crunchy noodle things and the sizzly plates. So good!

I also loved Suko Thai, in that rotating restaurant spot on Welch up above. Their pissed-off chicken was awesome.

I don't think anyone has yet mentioned Old George's, OG location on Main St. It was great thin-crust pizza. When they moved down to where Gregory's Coffee had been, they had a great Friday personal deal for which you had to pay cash, but then they just kept increasing their prices and never offered credit card. They just sort of priced themselves out of the market.

Man, I forgot all about that. I even forgot what Dave's position on anything was. Since I didn't have one of the shirts, I'm guessing I did not, in fact, agree with Dave.

Thinking the Amalgamated was where Dublin Bay is now. Was Hombres at the same location along with a Japanese steakhouse?

I think I've heard of about five of the places you guys have mentioned in this thread. How old are all of you?! ;)

Also: RIP The District

In the bar category I would put Sgt Peppers. I used to frequent that bar when I first turned 21. Was easily my favorite bar on Welch until it closed. Gone to soon. #RIP

I'll add Flying Burrito to the list. Yes I realize it's still open as Fighting Burrito (although the one in Ankeny closed), but it was amazing for about the first year and then they started getting super cheap on you. Kind of like Panchero's now where they measure every little thing with those little cups.
