The Pokey Stix thread got me thinking about all the places I miss in Ames that have closed. What are yours?
Off the top of my head:
Gumby's: Pokey Stix and Pepperoni rolls
HomeTeam Pizza: Dirt cheap drunk food, 3 mediums for $10. Plus they had a cheesy commercial shot at Sterling.
Angies: Didn't seem to last long but that was a great after bar spot, always packed, good breakfast.
La Fuente: Margarita Challenge! Solid mexican food, although El Azteca topped it when they came to town.
The Truck Stop: Great food just a little out of the way. Cyclone Slam ftw
Battles: The original location, went downhill a bit once they moved to Welch and owner died.
Elwood Drive: Screw University Boulevard.
There was a Brown Bottle in Ames, Cedar Falls, and Iowa City. I ate at the one in Cedar Falls last time RAGBRAI went through there. Got engaged at the one in Ames.
CoCost! Black Pepper Beef for the win! There was a Chinese restaurant on Welch Avenue across from the Subway. I can't remember the name of it. They had some of the best fried shrimp dishes. I was never a fan of Chinese food before I went there and most Chinese since has been a disappointment in comparison.
Anyone remember the name of it?
Which of these would want in Ames? More at:

It's still there. Hopefully forever!Like the last time I was in Ames my wife thought Taco Time had closed. It's comforting more for the nostalgia than the food.
Donutland.
They were open all night and we would go there about 1 Am and get a dozen Rasberry filled sugar donuts. YUMMMM
DaVinci's
There's one in crapidsDonutland.

Coincidentally, or is it with a tinge of irony, I took my future wife there upon our first meeting. Being the one with a car, I had picked her up with her friends as a favor when they needed a ride. We walked to Taco Time, ah history. It's still there. Hopefully forever!
I have strong ties to Taco Times - I was a day shift super at the one in Pullman, WA when my ex was in grad school...went into labor there. And when we moved to Iowa in 1983, my first job here was as the bookkeeper for Mac & Janice's three Taco Time stores.
No, on Chamberlain by Kum and Go.Was DaVincis the Italian place on the south side of LW almost outside of Ames on the west side of town? If so, definitely DaVincis.
Had my first official college date there. Also loved Duggans. It was on my way home, and I'd stop and get a couple 50 cent happy hour Michelobe Dark draws.JHC I swooned seeing your Boyd's Dairy Store post. Girlfriends, old Campustown and the threater. Warm Friday and Saturday nights sights and sounds walking there. Sigh.
On edit: For years I had one of Boyd's returnable glass 1/2 Gal. milk jugs. Good catchall vase.

The Almagamated Brown Bottle was one of them I believe.
