On TV from Indiana, Hilton didn't seem to have the buzz it usually does. Anyone who was there care to comment on that? Seemed like a lot of people sitting down and not many students there.

Students weren't there. Even with the students, there will still be some quiet games. It's really no different than the last 4 years. A few of the games we will have threads bringing up the fact that the balcony is only 1/3 full in the student section.

Hilton's usually Hilton only for big games. Or in smaller games, when we're making a run from behind.

How does break work with Saturday's game? Part of the student's package or not?

This game is not part of the student package. I did notice last night the the student pep band was there (alumni pep band or local high schools had been playing over break).

Everyone, including the team, was out-of-synch. And usually the people who have the seats normally held by students, are there less frequently so they don't have quite the same passion/intensity.

It also don't help when you play an inferior team and go up 18 in the first half. The crowd and players tend to do nothing for a while. Thus we lost the lead and the fans had to get back into it. So minus the students and the huge early first half lead. It basically took the fans out of the game as well.

Yeah, winter break games are NOT included in the student package. However, I'm pretty sure students do actually have first shot at buying the tickets if they want them. Problem is that VERY FEW always do. For the first conference home game which is always during break, there might be a few rows of actual students is all. With that said, whatever is left is sold off to the public. But yes, not having the students there makes a BIG difference in the loudness and the overall environment of the arena.

Winter break, no students. They fill in the lulls and low spots of the game and then everyone else get's rowdy when things get hot. Atmosphere was very normal for a break game.

Saturday is a break game but I read on here that students had first chance to buy tix....with it being the Saturday before classes start, I assume/hope there will be more of a student showing, but it still won't be like normal.

Is this really surprising considering:

* students gone
* the trajectory of the game ( we got out to big lead rather easily….then slowly lost it and couldn’t pull away until very end)
* playing a team projected to finish last in conference
* much bigger games on the very near horizon

There was more working against having a raucous crowd than working for it.

Was very disappointed. Especially the second half. Even if our team isn't making plays the crowd can do it's part and make it hard on the other team. Amazing how much students make a difference.

FWIW I've noticed ESPNU also has a tendency to reduce crowd noise during it's games, moreso than the main ESPN stations.

Oh yeah and the other factors affecting the intensity: the 8:00 PM start (everyone's favorite excuse), fresh wintry mix, rising interest rates, the China stock market, Iran/Saudi Arabia, North Korea bombs, and the never-ending political haranguing.

Bottom line ... possibly the largest crowd, not counting that one game, and we did get involved down the stretch when it mattered. I'll still take our crowd over just about anyone I've seen lately in a non-big game situation.

If we don't turn the ball over and make a few more bunnies, it would have been a whole lot more fun.
