Re: Dan McCarney!!!!!!!!!!

Thank goodness miller is in here to weigh in. We've dearly missed his unbiased and rational reasoning...

It would be easy to rail on ISU every day on the radio. It would probably cement a place in Hawkeye lore for me.

But I like the vast majority of the folks in Ames, and on this site. I am not going to do it.

And like many of you, this thing is baffling to me, its arguably the biggest sports story in the state of Iowa this year, one of my jobs is to focus on sports in this state, and that's what I do.

I think bringing McCarney back would be awesome. I know some will disagree with that, and I understand their rationale.

I just cant believe this could get any worse. What have we done as loyal fans to deserve this? If Chizik doesnt get the job at Auburn.....S#%* will hit the fan with the donors, season ticket sales, fanbase, etc....

Re: Next head coach?

We HAVE to go after Turner Gill big time IMO.

I don't want another coordinator taking this job... period. And I don't want someone that is used to coaching all 4 and 5 star athletes... and doesn't have experience taking average talent further than they should.

Turner Gill fits the mold. He gets more out of average talent than anyone in the country IMO. Go get him JP!!!

I agree with this entirely. He is a perfect fit. He has taken a program that was a mess and made it a conference contender. He has a Midwest background, he has name recognition, and it would get the fan base fired up. The upside for him is that the program has nowhere to go but up.

John, I do agree with a lot you say - but that McCarney comment had hawkeye blinders on. Any ISu fan that wants this program to go anywhere wants someone else - we have spent the better part of 2 decades with MAC and appreciate what he did here, but it is time to move on.

If MAC was the answer for our football problems, would have brought back Johnny Orr to replace McD last year, at least we would win our home games.

Official Turner Gill thread...

He wants out of Buffalo for a BCS job. He's a proven winner. He's interviewed at other places and not gotten the job. We can give him more than Buffalo can. This is a hire that is a) feasible (I don't believe we have a shot at Gary Patterson at ALL) and b) would get fans, faculty, and most importantly, possibly our players energized and excited. I guess it seems too good to be true, but I think it's a realistic goal.

I would be all for it. Can't go with a "sexy" coordinator hire with this one. Has to be a coach that has proven he can manage a game and WIN. I don't care what level.

He would be nice but at this point I don't know why he would come here. Buffalo is a better job right now, BCS school or not.

Re: Official Turner Gill thread...

Him or Patterson should be #1 and #2.....Gill has spent the better part of his life 2 hours west and is familiar with the area and coaches to recruit. He proved that he can turn around a program (see Buffalo and their first bowl game EVER this year).

Whatever. You're a hawk and you stir the pot on this message board all the time.

Gary Patterson: Current salary is $1 million (just under) and he turned down the Minnesota job last year that would have made him just over $2 million a year.

Not sure if we would be able to pull him away.

Turner Gill: I like him. He is a good coach and knows how to get the most out of his players. Though we would be in a foot race with other schools, he may be worth it. (anywhere he goes will be a huge pay increase from $183,000)

I'll throw Chris Petersen into the mix. He makes about $900,000 annually, again not sure if we have what it takes to pull him away.

I would like any of these three really. My honest opinion is that we will/would strike out on all three. I hope Pollard has some magic.

I am sick of posts pointing out the great turnarounds made elsewhere.... The knocks on McCarney are also out of line... Prior to Mac's final season, do Cyclone fans remember the 7-4 season ? 3 out of 4 of those losses were in overtime ! (at Nebraska, at Missouri, at Kansas) The only straight up loss was here at home against Bayor following the deflating loss in Lincoln. I guess what I am saying is I want our team to be competitve and respected on and off the field. McCarney delivered in those areas in a tough recruiting environment. I never thought McCarney should go based on 2 failed BIG12 north appearances in the BIG12 title game. I on the other hand also thought, at the time, a change was needed for both parties at hand. McCarney did well with the change... we have not. It is going to be tough, our geography does no favors. It won't ever happen, but I do believe our current team and athletes would compete in the Big Ten on philosophy and athletes. The Big 10 is longitudial all on the same ground in terms of recruiting. Their conference is set-up EAST to WEST. A kid recruited to Iowa or Michigan State is basically the same sales pitch in terms of geography. We are the northern most school in a conference set up latitudial NORTH to SOUTH. I don't believe Nebraska will see the likes of dominance of the past because of recruiting and the set-up of the BIG 12. I want a coach that is long term- hardened- someone with past HEAD COACHING experience and maybe even looking to end his career here... not by being fired. It would not be out the question to look towards McCarney- I know at the unliking of some.. but look at the coach at Oregon State- left and came back... and doing well for them.

Now beyond the quick bring back McCarney ideas... who do we want ?

UTEP ? Mike Price... maybe too old ? but seasoned and experienced ?

Up and comings.... but fear to lose also if successful....

MIKE LOCKSLEY, ILLINOIS OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR. Have you seen quarterback Juice Williams and the Illini's offense? The big-time production is because of "Locks," who doubles as a standout recruiter.

TODD GRAHAM, TULSA. First, he took Rice to its first bowl since 1960 in his only season (2006) with the Owls. Now, he has Tulsa poised to finish unbeaten in just his second season with the Golden Hurricane.

Wow- are we really having this discussion ?? / argument again ?
We are behind the eight ball in terms of geography... and our conference lay-out. Is Iowa really that much better than us ?

Would it be that hard to get one of these guys?
Patterson (would be my choice- more ties to TX)
Gill (would be a close second)
Graham
Peterson
Tubberville
Hoke
Mason
Kelly

Personally, I don't think Chizik to Auburn is as big a deal from the ISU side. Not sure why everyone is so pissed. He was going to leave at some point, it just happens to be with only 5 wins. That would concern me more as an Auburn fan.

Plus, everyone loves a good coaching search:wink:

how many of our recruits will still come to Iowa St? Or do you think most of them will follow Chiz to Auburn?
