To me, he was referring to the average longevity and extremely high expectations put upon coaches at this level, saying that it might not be his decision to make all the time.
The original sound byte did make CPR come off that way a little. The next day, there were expanded quotes in the paper that clarified his responses, I think. He said at the end that, "If I am here in 20 years, I'll consider myself a very lucky man."
To say CPR will be here for the duration of his coaching career would be naive. Heck, who really thought Johnny would leave Ann Arbor to come to Ames oh so many years ago? Anybody who has success is going to be showered with offers. That goes with the territory, but he has roots here, he has family here, he feels at home here...
I think it would take an incredible offer for him to even consider leaving, which at some point will occur if we continue to improve. That said, as long as he is here, I think he's always focusing on the task at hand, not polishing his resume annually.
