Just a guess - download the signals of ALL television stations off the satellites and then make them available to cable companies and over the Internet to all?

I don't fully understand all this stuff. I know Google is putting up that fiber network in KC, which is supposed to bee 100 times faster than cable. Apparently they did a test on Stanford's campus and people were getting 150mbps download speed. Does anyone know what this proposed antenna farm would do?

If I understand it correctly, that antennas are the "input" to the fiber network from various broadcast media.

Sounds like it would be the input point for them to take signals from various networks and send them out for tv service over its google fiber project.

I wonder if that could mean that after KC, Google Fiber could make its way up into iowa.

“In a FCC Public Notice (page 11) for Satellite Communication Services Google Fiber is seeking to “register a C-band receive-only earth station and a Ku-band receive-only earth station in Council Bluffs, Iowa.” The satellites would be used to provide analog and digital audio, data and video services. The application discusses an array of 4.5 meter satellite dishes, and seeks access to transmissions from satellites including Intelsat 9, which carries international television programming.”

International TV stations access?

So why is this involved with Google Fiber? From my understanding Google Fiber was only focusing on high-speed internet at this point. But this is dealing with a tv service. I would think Google would want to get their internet network connected with more than 1 city before they moved on to the next phase.

There is more info in this Omaha World-Herald article:

Money - Omaha.com

I saw this same article at the CB Nonpareil site earlier today but don't see it there now.

They can do internet and tv over the same network, just as FiOS and U-verse do now.

Even better, i bet google uses some sort of googletv box for its set top boxes... its already buying one of the biggest cable box makers in motorola mobility (which also gains it a bunch of patents for its mobile side)

But if offering video content is the company's intent, the move would pit Google against cable television providers as well as Internet-based video products like Netfix and Hulu.

Compete with Direct TV and Dish? How about a real B12 Network?

I work with a lady whose husband works for Cox Communications... I guess the KC Cox's and Omaha Cox's are pretty much merging into one... So they think maybe Cox is preparing to be bought out by google...

Google needs to buy mediacom. It went private awhile back which some speculated meant it might look to be sold.
