Friday 5: Top 5 Iowa license plates

Iowa is expected to unveil a new license plate design. With that, and recent related CF discussion in a thread, started by Rods79 … Rank your top 5 Iowa license plates of all time.

Stick to standard (non-specialty) plates.

From the post-generic era, 1996-98 is probably the best — the last one I had as an Iowa resident was the blue plate.

Iowa’s plate history is largely bland, but quick research suggests few states had any visually advanced design prior to at least the ‘70s … so some of it is a matter of color combos and digit arrangement. The stacked county numbers that became standard from late-50s to late-70s are dorky, but I have a bit of nostalgia for it.

For the 96-98 design is my stand alone choice so I'm going off the board a bit and doing my top 5 states plates.

Please don't tell me the HAWKSTD plate is not an actual plate. If it's not, every generalization I've grown to appreciate about EIU fans is a house of cards and you just collapsed it. You've ruined my day, my week, my month, my year and my life.

HAWKSTD is definitely a real plate, I've seen that vehicle several times around the DSM area.

HAWKSTD is definitely a real plate, I've seen that vehicle several times around the DSM area.

I used to see it regularly as well. It's an older guy that works somewhere in the East Village.

Why do Iowa plates have the squiggly lines down the middle of them? It is really ugly and messes up the look of my vanity plates.

the black and white dordt college plate is the best for a lot of vehicles depending on what color your vehicle is. I had one for a bit and used a license plate frame to cover the dc.

I saw a Hawkeye plate at Hy-Vee in Cedar Rapids last fall that read:

IM ONE2

That could go several different ways in Iowa City.

My favorite vanity plate I saw was in the QC. An Iowa State plate that had WWJOD.
