Of course, his name will come up in all sorts of searches for coaches. However, there are two related factors that need to be kept in mind that tell me that he will be here for a long time:
1. The unique Hoiberg Narrative. Grew up near Hilton, ball boy, Ames High star, ISU star, NBA, ISU coach. There is no story like that in the history of basketball. So, what is the next chapter? The NBA just for the money? No, that turns his story into pretty much the same story as ever other NBA coach. The next chapters in the Hoiberg Narrative are Big 12 championships, Final Fours, and National Championships. Note that I used the plural. Imagine the legacy that he will have (nationally, not just in Iowa) when this happens. It is a story that is almost unimaginable. I think he is motivated by this legacy. And in 10-15 years, after accomplishing these things, I could see him moving into a role as NCAA Commissioner (if there isn't such a thing, they will make it for him) and becoming the face of college sports for another decade. He could make even more money than an NBA coach by writing books, doing speeches, taking sponserships, etc.
2. Trust in Recruiting. It is so hard to trust a college coach in recruitment. They all say that they will be there for the recruit, but statistics suggest that it isn't true most of the time. Hoiberg's unique legacy gives him a level of credibility in recruiting that no one else has. When he says he is staying, he can point to all the other parts of his narrative as evidence. No other coach can do that. Further, if he flirts around with NBA coaching offers, he erodes his unique advantage in recruiting. His name will come up all the time, but I don't expect to see him ever interview for one of the jobs. I don't think Hoiberg wants only to recruit only one-and-done players and the best transfers. I think he also wants to recruit the best young talent and develop it. After all, he is a great coach who is fantastic at developing talent (and helping guys work through their issues to get to their talent). But, he won't keep getting these players if he is always seen as being on the verge of leaving for the NBA.
