Ewwwww. Long time Open Flame patron here. But this weekend might have been the straw that broke the camel's back. Has there been a change in management up there? Crazy-bad service on Friday night - and it's not like the place was overly busy. Order a drink 3 times before I finally received it. When our meal was *finally* delivered the Texas toast fell on the floor. I pointed it out (because I couldn't reach it) as I thought they might want to pick it up. Naw - just got walked on the rest of the night. I saw waitstaff look right at it as they stepped on, or over, it. They at least delivered steak to me like I ordered.

We tried TR in Ames over the Christmas break. We happened by it and it didn't look all that busy so we wandered in. There was a wait for a table, but we got seats at the bar. We watched two bartenders work their tails off serving all the drinks and waiting on the people eating at the bar. The manager - well, I assume he was the manager since his shirt was slightly different than the rest of the staff - chewed out one of the bartenders in front of everyone sitting there. Something about she didn't clean up the night before to his liking. She actually took it really well, even though I thought he handled the situation really poorly. She actually apologized to us for having to listen to it.

The food was bad. Burnt sweet potato. Over done prime rib (I ordered med-rare and received well done/shoe leather). Tasteless beef. Lack of sour cream/butter for potato. Dirty silverware.

We should know better than to go to these places. We buy a quarter of high-quility, aged beef from family on a regular basis. Eating at a discount steak place is as bad as buying ground beef from WalMart. Only did that once! Wow, I feel sorry for people who think this is how beef tastes.

With all that said, I've eaten at Outback and Timber Lodge when I'm traveling as that's what is near the hotel. Honestly, I can't complain about anything I've ever been served at either.

I haven't been to Open Flame in a few years, we were going to the Branding Iron in Nevada until it closed because it was less busy, and they had some awesome rubs and seasonings. I wonder if the management did change at OF?

We usually just grill steaks at home these days, too. Cheaper, and it's a lot easier to get the right level of heat.

how does that save any time? I dont get it.

Well, when I can call when my husband gets home from work, get on the list, and leave the house 30 min later when he's showered and ready, I save time as opposed to not getting on the list until we get there. Or call when out and about. All time spent is not the same.

TR's food is fine, its the rest of the experience that blows. I don't know how they convinced people that its worth waiting 2 hours for, but they have, and good for them.

Agree with Al. Food is good, price is fine, but the experience crowd sucks. I live within 3 minutes of 1 and have eaten there once in two years. To busy

Anyone who puts Outback near the top of any list of chain steakhouses obviously hasn't been there in the last five years.

I'm a fan of Texas Roadhouse. I think it's got good food and portion size for the price point. Of course it's not on par to the "great" steak houses, but then again, would you expect a Toyota Corolla to be the equivalent of a Mercedes Benz?

The one time I ate at Longhorn I ended up with a nasty case of food poisoning (bad evening all around - it was the evening ISU lost to Kentucky). Perhaps I just ended up with a tainted steak. The rest was okay, but even then I preferred the food at TRH. Outback is okay as well.

Like most, overall I'd much rather just grill my own steak at home.

That always seems to turn out better.

I've never had a steak at a steakhouse that is better than what I grill at home.

If you have any kind of grilling skill, you can do better at home (assuming you buy decent beef). That's probably why we only go to steakhouses in the winter...

While my GF and I were waiting to be seated at TR, one of the employees asked if we wanted to hear "the story about Texas Roadhouse" which I thought assume it was going to be the history of TR but instead the employee told us that TR has excellent drink specials and delicious appetizers.

I went last week for my 1st time ever. We called ahead so there was no wait for us. But I have to agree with the OP. My food was nothing great. The place doesn't even come close to the hype.

I have and thought their wings were some of the better ones I have had at a chain restaurant. My meal was ok but I just wanted to drink a large beer.

LMAO....went into the Outback to soley buy a gift certificate--the hostess was a smartass dope and I told the manager what I thought of her. I waited tables and bartended through college so I usually give those folks the benefit of the doubt and rarely complain.

Then another time on my birthday I took a big bite of those mashed potatoes. They were not only too hot--there was a large, white, industrial plastic TWISTY-TIE in my bite of potatoes. One of those opaque ties they use on a sack of potatoes. It was in my mouth.

I couldn't believe I didn't see it--but it blended right in and the disinterested waitress didn't apologize--and they were going to offer me a free dessert. Needless to say I haven't been back to that DUMP
