After sleeping on it I still feel pretty much the same as I did last night. It was a lackluster team performance but nothing making me worried about the team with one exception.
125: Larson's loss to Devoy wasn't good but Devoy beat Finch solidly last season so coming back and beating Escobar made me feel a lot better about it. I think Larson (assuming he doesn't lose the spot to hall) will be a .500 wrestler for us this season unless he shows a lot of improvement. Which is about what I expected from the weight class
133: Probably our 2nd weakest weight. I have a feeling this weight is going to be a lot of "avoid giving up bonus points" type matches. Was hoping for this weight to be more like 125/141 where we might not set the world on fire but would at least have a good chance to hold our own.
141: I was expecting to see more out of Moreno but it is tough to get a bead on how good/bad that performance was since Gustavo Martinez is the #1 ranked NIAA wrestler. And since it is NIAA that might mean he's pretty good, or it might mean he is pretty mediocre. I'm going to hold off judgment on this weight class until next week.
149: Goettl got a forfeit and then got caught. So tough to make much of a judgment on how he'll do at 149. He looks a lot healthier though.
157: I have a feeling Nicholson is going to end up being the guy here this season. He had an impressive debut and I like how he went in for the kill at the end there even though he already had a very comfortable lead.
165: I would have liked to see Moreno open up more in this second match but he looked like a guy who is ready to AA again this year.
174: Definitely disappointed in Weatherman's loss but the mistakes that cost him the match are easily correctable. I think he's probably overrated at #9 but he's still going to win a lot of matches this season
184: Weatherspoon is going to hold his own just fine while Beard is out and I think he's going to make a lot of noise for us at 184 the next three years.
197: I don't like how Gadson tightened up in his second match but opening the season with a win over the #12 wrestler in the country isn't anything to complain about
HWT: Sound the panic alarm, Smith is not the answer. I think the coaching staff made a huge mistake by not bringing in a Juco guy here.
Team: We did not bring our A game last night. It wasn't a meet to be proud of but the guys still took care of business and brought home a pair of wins. Nobody was taking lung time outs but the wrestlers were visibly tired in the second set of matches. I expect us to look a lot better next week and be 5-0 at the end of the month.
