285: Eric Thompson WBF over Ben Perna (ISU), (0:43)

After sleeping on it I still feel pretty much the same as I did last night. It was a lackluster team performance but nothing making me worried about the team with one exception.

125: Larson's loss to Devoy wasn't good but Devoy beat Finch solidly last season so coming back and beating Escobar made me feel a lot better about it. I think Larson (assuming he doesn't lose the spot to hall) will be a .500 wrestler for us this season unless he shows a lot of improvement. Which is about what I expected from the weight class

133: Probably our 2nd weakest weight
. I have a feeling this weight is going to be a lot of "avoid giving up bonus points" type matches. Was hoping for this weight to be more like 125/141 where we might not set the world on fire but would at least have a good chance to hold our own.

141: I was expecting to see more out of Moreno but it is tough to get a bead on how good/bad that performance was since Gustavo Martinez is the #1 ranked NIAA wrestler. And since it is NIAA that might mean he's pretty good, or it might mean he is pretty mediocre. I'm going to hold off judgment on this weight class until next week.

149: Goettl got a forfeit and then got caught. So tough to make much of a judgment on how he'll do at 149. He looks a lot healthier though.

157: I have a feeling Nicholson is going to end up being the guy here this season. He had an impressive debut and I like how he went in for the kill at the end there even though he already had a very comfortable lead.

165: I would have liked to see Moreno open up more in this second match but he looked like a guy who is ready to AA again this year.

174: Definitely disappointed in Weatherman's loss but the mistakes that cost him the match are easily correctable. I think he's probably overrated at #9 but he's still going to win a lot of matches this season

184: Weatherspoon is going to hold his own just fine while Beard is out and I think he's going to make a lot of noise for us at 184 the next three years.

197: I don't like how Gadson tightened up in his second match but opening the season with a win over the #12 wrestler in the country isn't anything to complain about

HWT: Sound the panic alarm, Smith is not the answer. I think the coaching staff made a huge mistake by not bringing in a Juco guy here.

Team: We did not bring our A game last night. It wasn't a meet to be proud of but the guys still took care of business and brought home a pair of wins. Nobody was taking lung time outs but the wrestlers were visibly tired in the second set of matches. I expect us to look a lot better next week and be 5-0 at the end of the month.

100% Agree. I cannot believe that the coaching staff wasn't able to properly evaluate what we have for talent at HWT....

Also, we still looked very bad on bottom, which seems to be a trend over the last few years. However, I was impressed with the attack on the feet. Our guys seemed to push the action for the most part.

Also, I want to add that I am very excited for Spoon. He is on track to do big things!

Loved the fight out of Bauer. He can hang with alot of people on his feet, but I'm not sure anywhere else. Still, I expect Dakota to play a large role for this team in the future.

Tom K used to run the blog, but he is doing the commentary now. I think it is an intern running it. Both of them are pretty rough at their new assignments.

I've never heard that announcer before - he was just brutal.

I stated in another thread that HWT will be our weakest weight. Getting stuck twice last night shows I might be right.

Conditioning can improve throughout the season and probably will. The problem is the improvement is generally only marginal because a commitment to conditioning is a year round effort.

I have a feeling we trained through this meet, plus it was the first time making weight on the year for almost everybody. So given that what I saw was guys being gassed rather than guys needing lung time outs I am not terribly concerned only because it is the first meet. If we are gassing against WVU in a week I'll get worried about it.

So Hall is sitting out due to his time spent at the OTC? Is this the norm? Does anyone know of a similar situation where the wrestler was immediately eligible?

I am not sure what the deal is with Hall. Both McCauley and him back out of verbals (Destin to Wisc and then us and Earl from Rutgers) and spent 2 years at the OTC. Destin is listed as a freshman and Earl is listed as a soph. Not sure what is causing the differences.

This could certainly be an explanation but given past conditioning issues I'm a bit concerned. We'll see in the coming weeks.

Of course you are "concerned." Still ****** that you couldn't continue to bury KJ after Nationals last year.

Why do you NEVER appear other than to criticize the coaches and Iowa State, and of course to try to glorify the hawks?

I have posted several times that I was pleased with the NCAAs performance and I'm comfortable with KJ's return. Not thrilled, but comfortable.

I have said nothing about Iowa in this thread.

Weatherspoon and Nicholson did outstanding jobs with their aggressive style and made the meet a joy to attend, hopefully more of the Cyclone wrestlers can get motivated to step it up like these two.

Whew. That was one tight set of matches over the minor leagues. Is Grandview a powerhouse?

Yes. They are probably the 5th best dual team we wrestle this year depending on who we meet at the national duals (Iowa/Oklahoma/Oklahoma State/Minnesota being better).

I think UNI is better than they are. UNI is better than us at 125, 133, 141, 184 and HWT.

Lots of good coming out of Friday night; some new/red-shirted talent that was impressive. I continue to be impressed by increasing depth of this team.

Obviously the lighter weights remain an area of concern. This will improve a bit with Hall's return.

Biggest issue is why in heaven's name would we schedule back-to-back matches like this. It's an injury waiting to happen. Just don't get it. Plus, losses like Weatherman - probably due to fatigue resulting in loss of concentration - hurts future rankings and possibly seeding.

Next biggest issue was conditioning - against Drexel. Obviously fighting Grandview right away would create problems. But conditioning early in the season has been a problem in the past with Jackson's teams. I thought it would be addressed by now.

I'm guessing the double duals early on were scheduled to help us settle starting spots and help make sure everybody gets to 17 matches.

I'm interested to hear how a whopping two matches in the same day this time of year is somehow debilitating. You do realize entering open tournaments where you guys may wrestle 5 plus matches in the same day is common this time of year...don't you?

Ah shucks, just fell off the turnip truck and realized that is news to me. So very, very sorry:( 'cept entering a t'ment is different than scheduling back to back matches. You do realize that, don't you? BTW, love good discussion, but hate sarcasm.
