You really shouldn't disrespect that song and Jimmy Buffet like that you are totally offensive to the parrot head nation.
Been going to football games since 1992. Never once heard "I don't care", it's always been stupid effing song. I disagree with Phaedrus saying that it's classless, either version derides the song that's being played anyway so who cares if it gets a little vulgar. It was a proud moment for me when I attended my first game as a student and first joined in. My first year as a student was 2003 so the moments screaming "to this stupid effing song" were pretty much the high points of that year.
I never heard the "and I don't care" option... and it's just stupid.
It's option #2. Conversation done.
Apples to oranges. Helser doesn't represent ISU, go cyclones go does. Why can't the students chant that instead? Instead they use a derogatory term during a song that encompasses the entire university.
Maybe i'm just being too sensitive......
While we're at it, can someone get the real lyrics to "Mony, Mony" back? That used to be a good song until the guidos, frat boys and knuckledraggers had to add their stupid to it.
gayest collection of words ever.
Okay, so what are the right lyrics to Margaritaville? Is it God damn salt or mother ******* salt? I need to know for the next time I'm drunkenly singing it.
god damn salt, clearly
Many year lurker, first time poster and Alumni Band member from the 70's.
Yes there are words to Go Cyclones Go. Although I've joined with the rest and use the don't care version.
Go Cyclones Go
Your Power Show
We Know you'll fight, fight, fight for victory state.
There are then the Go's with the beat between verses.
The first 2 fights are extended for 3 syllables, fi-i-ight
Go CYCLONES
Technically, it's neither. The song was written as an instrumental-only piece. Band members have a looooong history of creating lyrics to songs that don't have them, and that's exactly what happened here. Since the song was called "Go Cyclones, Go" but didn't have any lyrics, the band back in the day decided that the title WOULD be the lyrics. Those were the only lyrics sung for 30 years, with a brief exception in the 70s (as noted in the first quoted post above). It returned to the one-line lyrics for a while, then the student body morphed it into "Don't know the words". As far as I've been able to ascertain, the "stupid ******* song" ending started to appear in force around 1993 or 1994, but wasn't really widespread until close to the end of the decade.Technically it's "Go Cyclones Go" repeated over and over but... otherwise it's "Don't know the words to this stupid ******* song"
When I went to (and worked) games between 1985 and 1994 it was always version number 1. I have no doubt it has been morphed over time.
Let's not get worked up over it. Sing what you want but be respectful to the little ears that may be around you. I know I have to occasionally censor my comments to Ed Hightower based on who is sitting around me.
If the University has a problem with it, maybe they should start a campaign to teach people the actual words, if they exist. At ISU Orientation, they teach you the words to the main fight song, and I've always been impressed with how many people actually know the words to that. If we were made aware of the words, and how they fit with the tempo, I think people would be more likely to sing along.
The current version, with profanity developed because of a lack of awareness as to what the words are. I don't sing a long to it now because I don't sit in the student section, but I always get a chuckle out of kids. Kids having fun. Nothing wrong with it.

It is classless. If you sang that around my kids, I would point that out to you and ask you to stop.
So just because you never heard option #1 it doesn't count? Apparently others, include myself had. Personally, I have been going to games since the late 80's and have only heard of option #1. Additionally, "I don't care" fits better than the other option and just because it doesn't contain swear words doesn't make it stupid.
