Historically, the Lakers do not give coaches huge contracts. He makes $5.35M from UConn. Will he get more than that? Probably. But he won't get the $13-17M some NBA coaches are getting.

I would guess this is a leverage move to get a raise from and stay at UConn.

I also don’t think they’ve hired a coach worthy of a mega contract since Phil Jackson.

Except he’s not in charge of draft and roster decisions - that’s Pelinka (and Jeanie Buss). I don’t follow the NBA as closely as I used to, but every indication over the last few years is that the Lakers, at this point, aren’t willing to continue to mortgage the future to load up for LeBron right now.
I bet LeBron is the person truly in charge of every draft and roster decision. That’s why his son who Is not even close to NBA talent will get drafted by anyone who hopes to lure LeBron to their team. No thanks, I’d pass.

If I am Hurley, I'm doing this to get all the money personally with an extension and support of funds for going forward as possible. He pretty much already has it but the headaches of NIL etc is probably less than going to LA any time soon with what they have going on.

They’re going to do something this year though. And probably something stupid too. LeBron isn’t going to want to spend one of his last years in rebuilding mode. My guess is they go hard after Trae Young.

Coaching for the Lakers is one of the pinnacles for the sport as a coach I’d assume. Coaching LeBron is a double-edged sword. You get to coach one of the all-time greats. But LeBron has historically demanded some pretty terrible rosters (he was the reason they brought in Westbrook). And he has a tendency to get coaches fired.
If they go for the three star approach, it'd all be with an eye towards who do you want to pair with AD after LeBron. That could be Trae Young, Donovan Mitchell would be a better target, etc. They may also opt to keep some flexibility and upgrade the supporting cast around LeBron/AD and see what better coaching/player development provides. They'll certainly be active in some capacity.

I kind of feel like LeBron is planning on LA taking Bronny in the 2nd round, playing one year with his kid on the roster and then retiring. He may not be getting the same amount of front office influcence right now as he has before, given that he's got only a couple years left in the best case scenario. However, spending a 2nd rounder to keep him around and happy in exchange for having his hands out of the coaching/roster decisions seems like a good trade off.

I don’t think they could afford Mitchell, who’s a free agent, for next year. They could trade for Young with expiring, role player contracts as well as future firsts. Atlanta will definitely be in rebuild mode next year, so I could see them doing that.

I agree with you that Lakers take Bronny in the 2nd round. Everyone should remember, while LeBron the player doesn’t have the influence he used to, LeBron the person does.

Rich Paul runs the very powerful Klutch Sports and is basically an extension of LeBron. No NBA team will want to piss off Paul or Klutch

People havent mentioned that these coaches, Hurley especially, have massive egos that need to be fed. Back to back championships might have him looking to feed that ego and a new challenge. LA is basically the pinnacle of the sport.

Sounds like Hurley has informed staff and players that he is, in fact, in talks with the Lakers.

I haven’t read any posts on this thread yet but when I was driving to work today I heard this news. My first thought was, why the hell would he want to deal with the NBA players, his boss would unofficially be LeBron, he would probably be forced to draft and play Lil Bron, and he would have to move to California. He is already rich and is the current best at his profession. Makes no sense

Even more money and less of a mess to get players.

The pros are much more cut and dry and I'd guess less babysitting.

Bronny won't get drafted. But saying he's not close is a stretch. Based on his stats last year, sure. But he was hindered by cardiac arrest. He'll be a good role player in the NBA

Bronny is 100% getting drafted. Might be late first or second but he is 100% getting drafted. This is also one of the historically worst drafts of all time. He’s in easily

I'll put $100 to the charity/organization of your choice if he is.

I’m shocked at how many are surprised he’s entertaining this. The NBA and the Lakers job specifically is the highest position in the basketball coaching world. Why wouldn’t he at minimum talk to them?

Their recent hires definitely don't reflect being the highest position.

I'll be more than surprised if he is a good role player in the NBA. Theres really nothing suggesting that hes worthy of that not to mention he came in shorter than he was reported the last couple years and his defensive issues at the combine were not good at all. Im sure he'll get his shot for the obvious reasons but I dont see how there is a spot for him to get minutes. Will he get a roster spot, probably....minutes are probably not going to happen any time soon.

Darvin Ham was coming off being the top assistant on a Bucks team that had won the finals. He was widely considered one of best assistants in basketball if not the top, if I’m not mistaken. Frank Vogel had a lot of success in Indiana. Just could never beat Lebron/Wade in the playoffs. I can’t explain Luke Walton.

Just because it didn’t work for them doesn’t mean it wasn’t a coveted job.
