Historically, the Lakers do not give coaches huge contracts. He makes $5.35M from UConn. Will he get more than that? Probably. But he won't get the $13-17M some NBA coaches are getting.

I would guess this is a leverage move to get a raise from and stay at UConn.
They'd pay him. The NBA prints money and if he's who LeBron wants the Lakers will give him whatever it costs.

smart. back 2 back at uconn. thats the peak... get huge contract from the lakers.... last 2.5 years...

come back to college basketball at ANY program he wants.
Why wouldn't he do that now? Kentucky was just open. Did he pursue Duke when it was? Arkansas has huge donors. Ohio State, Michigan, USC...

Quick Google says they were paying Darvin Ham somewhere between $3-5M.

I thought JJ Redick was Lebron's guy too...
It would seem more likely that AD doesn’t necessarily want JJ and Hurley is an option Lebron would be good with. A Hurley hire would be more about life after LeBron that it is about LeBron this year.

No head coaching experience vs a guy who has all the leverage to just stay at UCONN. Also Likely LeBrons last coach/chance so more reason to go all out. For all we know JJ doesn't want to coach and just wants to stay on TV.

I would not be hitching my wagon to the Lakers just because of Lebron.
That team has age and money issues.
Roster construction/age is an issue but money is not for the Lakers. AD is the only really big money locked in after this year and the others signed beyond this year (Hachimura, Reaves, Vanderbilt, Vincent) are for the most part would be easy to trade. They also are back in a spot where they have up to 3 firsts that they can trade.

So they don’t have tons of flexibility this year, but plenty of ability to fully reshape the roster after this year if LeBron retires or they move on.

In the NBA everybody is playing by the same rules and there are contracts so he isn't having to constantly re-recruit his own team.

There's a reason college is losing lots of coaches to the NBA and NFL.

I haven’t read any posts on this thread yet but when I was driving to work today I heard this news. My first thought was, why the hell would he want to deal with the NBA players, his boss would unofficially be LeBron, he would probably be forced to draft and play Lil Bron, and he would have to move to California. He is already rich and is the current best at his profession. Makes no sense

Most all of those guys aren't reigning back to back champs...

They’re going to do something this year though. And probably something stupid too. LeBron isn’t going to want to spend one of his last years in rebuilding mode. My guess is they go hard after Trae Young.

Coaching for the Lakers is one of the pinnacles for the sport as a coach I’d assume. Coaching LeBron is a double-edged sword. You get to coach one of the all-time greats. But LeBron has historically demanded some pretty terrible rosters (he was the reason they brought in Westbrook). And he has a tendency to get coaches fired.

As I understand it part of Dan Hurley's philosophy and probably success is due to the fact that he's hyper intense and demands a ton from his players, I do not see that translating well to the pros.
He is also flexible, fitting his style to the players he has. His offense was constantly in motion at UConn which would play well in the NBA. Maybe not so much with Lebron, but who knows.

He is a heck of a coach, a lot like TJ, except Hurley seems like an arrogant jackass personally.

This is the stuff I think about when NIL gets annoying. Guy recruited a full roster. He got transfers. He had guys decide not to go to the NBA and return to school. And like that he's gone.

Maybe if he can find that balance to build rapport he can be successful.

If not, getting fired from a college or pro coaching job is a pretty sweet gig in itself.

Except he’s not in charge of draft and roster decisions - that’s Pelinka (and Jeanie Buss). I don’t follow the NBA as closely as I used to, but every indication over the last few years is that the Lakers, at this point, aren’t willing to continue to mortgage the future to load up for LeBron right now.
