Didn't read all the post but over heard a couple employees at the Ames store talking about not ordering anymore of several items which clearly sounded like a store closing to me since I just never see anyone in there on the few times I stop buy. They are way too expensive. I wish Cub foods would have continued on there.

I'm actually amazed Dahls has lasted this long. I can't remember the last time I ever walked into one of those and it was even remotely busy. Didn't matter which location either. Way too expensive too.

I live downtown so i often go to the Dahls on ingersoll. Its busy. Not as busy as the packed hy-vees in wdsm, but certainly not "dead". I ususally have to stand in a small line.
I do prefer hy vee tho, and if DT had a hy vee, id hit that instead.

The Dahls on Ingersoll has a location monopoly and id venture a guess that its brings in the most revenue of any Dahls by far. Probably double the others.

Unfortunate. Dahl's used to dominate Des Moines. I used to work in Dahl's frequently. The last project they completed was the store in Ames. It always felt like the Ames location was a long shot at best. Even though, as rumor has it, they were subsidised by SuperValu. Their money would have been better spent upgrading their existing mechanical equipment to something more efficient, especially the refrigeration. I believe our salesman literally begged them to upgrade their equipment since commericial energy rebates would pay for a large portion of the projects. For whatever reason they didn't do it. (Everyone else did.)

I believe thier money makers are Merle Hay, Fleur, Ingersoll and Beaver. Ankeny was a disappointment from day one.

Dahl's has been downsizing for years. They use to have stores in the Kansas City area. They also closed thier store at 9999 University in Clive a while back.

I think the issue is with the CEO, David Sinwell. He is almost as personable as a rock. Prior to becoming CEO he managed the Pharmacy at the E 33rd location (I believe). He is totally over his head but the board won't get rid of him. Now, its too late. Dahl's use to be a great company with many loyal customers. Its truly a shame.

I know for my job, there have been certain employees that have taken the stance and limiting how much product we bring in due to the amount of money that certain locations owe us still.

Talked to someone who would know. 3 stores are closing. Prospect Ave in WDM, Ankeny and 86th/Douglas.

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. 1 in 5 folks are swiping those cards. HyVee LOVES the Farm Bill...hell, I think they wrote it. Only our dumb *** governments would simultaneously sponsor programs supposedly to combat hunger and obesity aimed at the same population. Idiocracy.

1) If you ad-shop at Hyvee you can do very well cost wise (although you end up buying some things off the ad)
2) Fareway meat is by far the best
3) Hyvee has the best selection and most often best produce
4) Wal mart sucks in selection, meat, dairy but ok in price (although not as good as you might think)
5) Aldi not bad for basics and off brands
6) Dahls is just the worst
7) Conclusion - I am primary HyVee shopper but like Fareway and Aldi on the side. Wal Mart only if I have to. Throw in an occasional Trader Joes and Target. Dahls is good for bakery buns and thats about it.

Poor Dahls, I feel like they have been in denial for over a decade.

Newsflash!!! You can get the same grade meat at Hy-Vee as Fareway.

Newsflash #2!!! They get it from the same company

Kind of reminds me of speaker wire and Bose speakers.

That's true, and the only trade off is all your other groceries are more expensive, it's a win-win! Except one of the win's is a lose, so I guess it's more like a win-lose.

Same wholesaler. Not the same grade.

They closed this store, but opened the store at 156th in Clive. The store on University was a PITA to get in and out of, so they relocated.

I don't know if I am missing huge price differences between Fareway and Hy-Vee or what. I used to shop primarily at Fareway in Ankeny (Oralabor store), but since the Prairie Trail Hy-Vee opened I only shop there now. I am a pretty price conscious person and I do not see the big price differences between the two stores. Some things at Fareway are a few cents more and some things at Hy-Vee are a few cents more. Overall, to me, it seems like a wash between the two stores. Something I'm missing?
