Re: Complete Pollard Statement on McDermott, etc.

You guys are a trip, and I'm not just referring to you - just quoting as an example. The obsessing over how fans react to distract from the real problems continues!

Actually, based on what JP wrote (aka, not just thinking), we can assume Greg would be back again after next season regardless of record.

See ISU Football 2006.

A this point I am just trying to be difficult. That comment was meant as a smart *** comment, nothing serious.

Coach Mac resigned thus we didn't have to pay him 2.5 million dollars. Huge difference. Plus football is much bigger than basketball and when your entire athletic department depends on football, it is more important to make a change.

See below.

It wasn't 2.5 million but Mac definitely got paid.

Correct.

Except Dan McCarney got 12 years at Iowa State. And he coaches FOOTBALL!! College football runs athletic departments.

And Dan also won some games. Also, it generally takes longer to win in FB than it does basketball.

Regardless, it's very sad we're comparing Greg McDermott to Dan McCarney. I wish the only similarities they had were the Mc in the name, they are men and they both have "Mc" in their name.

I didn't say that at all. I said the ISU fans have made this choice, as they are supporting it with their season ticket purchases.

You guys do what you want to do with your dollars, same as anyone.

Now, as for the argument that you have to go and buy a ticket and show up so that you help recruiting and so that ISU does not lose revenue...if that is what you, or any fan feels is their duty or obligation, again, that's your call. It's your time and its your dollars.

Haha ok. I don't think ISU fans are making a choice. Seriously who honestly thinks before going to Hilton, "I am going to go watch the game and by me doing that it means I am ok with Greg and ok with the state of the progarm." Nobody thinks like that. ISU fans just love their basketball and will always go to Hilton to support their team.

As for the recruiting...that goes without saying Jon. Look at Carver. You guys aren't going to bring in any top 150 recruits when womens teams outdraw you attendance wise. No recruit wants to go play where this is no fan support. So ONCE AGAIN, how does it better the Iowa State program for fans to not show up to make a point that they want Greg gone? It doesn't.

As far as dollars go, how much do our MBB scholarships cost compared to what it costs to pay for McD and staff? Say 'support the players' all you want, but much more of every dollar goes to pay for the staff than the players.

It's not the money that it costs to bring players to Iowa State. It is the money that we could continue to lose if we can't get good enough players to Iowa State to be competitive

Plenty of people stopped going to games this season and likely won't be going to any next season.

How much did Dan get paid?

And we can go back and forth with the McDermott and McCarney comparisons. In the end it doesn't matter because they are completely different. One coaches football (top dog) and one coaches basketball.

That isn't at all the argument that Jon is making.

Jon is just pointing out the Hawkeye plan for banishing coaches. Considering how not awesome Iowa's been in basketball over the last several years, I don't think it's working Jon.

How's that been working out for you? I may be wrong, but I don't think you have had a better than .500 record the past four years.

But, at least your attendance isn't as bad as Iowa's so that you can bring in recruiting classes that under perform when they arrive?

Again, I say, how has your plan been working out for you ;)

How does Missouri keep bringing in good players than?

That's not the argument Jon is making. Jon is saying that ISU fans still went to games and that is why McDermott is back. He is implying that fans should stop going to games if they want Mac gone. Which I completely disagree with.

JP is no dummy. I am sure this type of announcement was being prepared for issuance after the season, but the big win gave him a big opportunity to push it out today.

At least he isn't sugarcoating it much. About the only other thing he could have done was mentioned "economic conditions" as acknowledgement of his contract blunder.

Or Jon, we could have terrible attendance like Iowa's, bring in worse recruits because of it like Iowa's, and be a worse team than we already are....like Iowa!!

Sure it's not working, but not because of attendance. Fans need to just keep doing their part. Not going to the games isn't going to help anything. It more than likely will HURT more than help

I find it funny that a HAWK fan is on a Cyclone board saying Cyclone fans shouldn't go to the games.

I don't think he is saying that is the only reason he is back, but it definitely helps JP make his decision. I would be willing to bet alot of money that if next year Hilton looks like Carver did this year, and we only win 4 conference games and finish with an overall record of around .500, the chances of a move being made will be about 500x more likely than it would be with 9,000 season tickets sold.

There were plenty of times in the latter half of this season where Carver and Hilton looked like twins.
