Intersting article. It looks like chizik only wants one QB to start.

Mid-Iowa Newspapers - Chizik says Cyclones need all to step up and be ready

KANSAS CITY Mo. - Iowa State football coach Gene Chizik laid the foundation for his program in his first season. But it will go unused if Chizik can't find the right players.

So when the Cyclones open camp Aug. 1, Chizik will look to fill a plethora of starting spots all over the field with anyone who can help ISU climb out of the Big 12 Conference's North Division cellar.
"It's going to be a very critical part of how we progress and how we develop our football team in the 29 practices you get before you play," Chizik said.
Most eyes will be on the quarterback battle between Austen Arnaud and Phillip Bates, both sophomores.

Most eyes will be on the quarterback battle between Austen Arnaud and Phillip Bates, both sophomores.
At Big 12 Media Days Wednesday, Chizik said he's still undecided on who to start but he ideally would like to settle on playing one quarterback and name a starter before preparation for the Cyclones' season opener against South Dakota State on Aug. 28 begins.
Arnaud, of Ames, came on strong at the end of last season, completing 20 of 37 passes for 267 yards in six games. But Bates, who spent last fall as a wide receiver, impressed the coaches in the final weeks of spring ball. He did in the same in the spring game, throwing for 140 yards and two touchdowns.
"Certainly, both of the guys in the spring made great strides," Chizik said. "Both of them understand the position hasn't been won yet."

Key word is ideally and I don't see a direct quote from him regarding it - so who knows what it means.

And I think for almost all coaches, the ideal situation is to have one QB - even the coaches that have ran 2 QB systems would likely tell ya that.

I just want everyone to know that I have been working behind the scenes with the coaching staff and we have successfully petitioned the NCAA and Big 12. With that petition I have been granted 4 more years of eligibility and will assume the #1 QB spot.

If we thought the field being cut into 1/3rds was bad, just wait until it goes to 1/16ths!

If the Chiz goes with one guy it may be best for the team but may create more controversy as both lack experience and neither if chosen will probably get off to a great start. Therefore, look for whoever does not get the starting job to be the most popular guy on the team and hottest topic of discussion when we’re chugging down beers in the parking lot at halftime. If the sportswriters can pick a Pre-Season Big XII Offensive Newcomer of the Year (Darrell Scott Colorado) before camps even start then I’ll pick Phillip Bates to be the starting quarterback.

Oh great - now you're insinuating that we're going to turn into EIU fans (you know, where the best player on the team and potential Heisman winner is the backup QB)...

Sam has found himself cast back as a Big 12 Football Coach. He has to figure out how to take the "Cyclones" to the next level before he can leap into a new challenge.

Which QB should get the start?
There seems to be somewhat of a split opinion on this one but most are leaning to AA to start. I'm guessing we'll start out with both QBs seeing ample playing time but I truely believe it will come down to only one as the season wears on and the better QB emerges. Personally, my gut feeling (and it's just a feeling) is that PB will eventually take over the QB position.

I would think the qb who makes fewest mistakes would have the best chance under Gene. He does not like miscues.

I hate to sidetrack here, but can we assume that JJ Bass is history since Scales didn't mention him as competing at RB?

Anybody think they will use some plays from the A11 offense so both QB's can be on the field. I see some college teams used it last year. Maybe we should give it a try.

I think that man is AA. That is not to say Bates will be mistake-prone, so Bates fans - chill for a sec. There are 2 reasons I think AA would be the more steady QB, at least to start out.

- AA played QB last season.
- Bates' style is supposedly a little more improv.

This A11 thing is like the new pink.

No, I doubt we'll see it. Biggest reason (other than I don't see it being a successful offense in collage and namely in the Big 12) is we don't have the horses for it. Sure, we have 2 QBs that are supposedly pretty good.

But all out speed at receiver? Not there yet.

And ya gotta have a very athletic offensive line - not sure we're there on that either.
