Chizik Announces Addition of Newest Cyclones

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State head coach Gene Chizik unveiled his 2008 class of national football signees Wednesday with optimism while recognizing the true quality of this group of incoming Cyclones won’t be accurately judged for three or four years.

“The main concern we had going into this recruiting year to upgrade the athleticism of our football team,” Chizik said. “That means speed, getting guys the can make you miss with the ball in their hands, guys in the secondary that can cover you. It was a focus throughout the football team. I think we have addressed that in a lot of ways.”

The class was balanced by position. Defensive end Jake McDonough, a first-team all-stater from West Des Moines (Iowa) High School joined with quarterback Jerome Tiller, who passed for nearly 1,600 yards and 12 TDs last season at Robert E. Lee High School in San Antonio, Texas. Tiller rushed also rushed for 770 yards and 12 touchdowns as a senior and was the member of Texas Top 100 by Rivals.com.

The class includes 22 high school seniors and one junior college transfer. The juco player is wide receiver Jason Carlson of North Dakota State College of Science. Carlson caught 46 passes for 747 yards and 10 touchdowns last season. Another wide receiver add will be Rivals.com four-star recruit Sedrick Johnson of Arp (Texas) High School. Johnson had 41 receptions for 633 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Two new Iowa State defensive backs are Leonard Johnson of Largo (Fla.) High School and Ter’ran Benton of Summit High School in Mansfield, Texas. Johnson played quarterback and defensive back for Largo. He passed for 911 yards and 12 touchdowns and rushed for 958 yards and nine scores, leading Largo on a 13-game winning streak all the way to the Florida Class 5-A state semifinals. Johnson also had 13 tackles and one interception. Benton showed great athleticism at Summitt, where he returned a fumble and a punt for a touchdown. Benton played both running back and cornerback.

Former Florida Rivals.com four-star high school tailback Bo Williams is part of the incoming class. He is already in school at Iowa State and will sit out the 2008 season after transferring from Florida. Williams, who hails from Lauderdale Lakes, Fla., chose Iowa State over 16 other schools as his new home.

It was the second recruiting class for Chizik and his staff at Iowa State, although his 2007 class was built while he still was hiring coaches a year ago.

“As the head coach you are involved in recruiting all the players, and I really enjoyed that,” Chizik said. “As an assistant coach you are concentrating on your specific student-athletes. It has been a lot of hard work but I have really loved meeting these men and bringing them into our football family.”

Spring football starts March 25. The Iowa State spring football game is April 19 at 1 p.m. in Jack Trice Stadium The Cyclones open the 2008 season Aug. 28 against South Dakota State.

This may be a stupid question, so don't jump down my throat.... But, what does "signing" actually mean in terms of them still being able to change their minds?

Just curious.

We would have to release them from their letter of intent. There are some ways around that, they can file various things to get out of it or sit out a year if we won't agree.

But generally, this binds them to ISU unless we release them.

They have signed a Letter of Intent. They cannot change schools now unless they are willing to sit out a year (D1A) or ISU grants them a release.

So no, not much changing of minds unless a kid wants to go to a JC and be re-recruited to D1A.

Question: Are we missing someone of the list of recruits? I thought I heard in the press conference that Coach referred a couple of times to class as 25 recruits and most lists show 24... Am I missing something?

There are only 24 currently listed. It was my understanding we plan to have a 25th but it may not be announced for a little while. I'm not sure if the staff knows who that is yet or has a couple guys in mind and is working to narrow that down to one.

Most of the information I have has been relayed to me by Jeremy - who has gotten it from the ISU staff.

Thanks for the clarification ISUFan22 on that.

Also, in watching head coach Gene Chizik speak today, I am that much more impressed again in the direction we are headed in football. Just another reminder of what a class act/straight shooter he is. Man, that guy is solid!

Solid coach and solid physically.

Is it any wonder that we could be undefeated in basketball, football and wrestling if the games were decided by coach vs coach battles? :)

Maybe that's a discussion for another thread - don't want to get this derailed.

Very excited for this fall and the years to come with a few of these guys. Again, with all the freshman coming in this year - it seems to me Chizik is here for "the long haul" (however long that may be) and thinks we have enough guys on the current roster to complete/win in '08 without getting a bunch of JUCOs.

One signee listed as DL - Roosevelt Maggitt played DL in high school, but, is it realistic to think that he'll play that at ISU at 215 lbs? NOt soon ,I would think. Staff must have confidence in returning roster.

you say there are 24 commits which means that bo williams scholly is counted on this year's class? yes or no?

perhaps jordan fields is the last commit he's the #8 DB in the country according to ESPN... they rank him as an 81 and Sedrick Johnson is only a 79

The press conference has come and gone. Gene is supposedly going to be on Marty & Miller any moment now (4pm-ish).

This article is from the presser today.
