If it means not starting Hammel at all in the series, it most definitely increases your chances of winning. I think, especially if the Cubs win the next 2, you go for the ******* win on Tuesday at home instead playing it safe and risking a 5th game in St Louis. If you pitch Lester Game 4, you could start Arrieta Game 1 and Lester Game 2 of the NLDS on normal rest. If you start Lester on Game 5, you cant pitch him until Game 3 on the NLDS.

I already posted the stats for pitchers going on three days rest in this thread, its not good. The Cubs are better off going with Hamnels/Wood/Cahill which I'm sure they are going to do.

I know CyJack disagrees, but what is everyone else's thoughts on pitching Lester on 3 days rest Tuesday if the Cubs win Monday?

I would rather Lester give us three to four good innings in game four than risk giving the ball to any of the other three.

Not a fan of pitching anyone on 3 days rest. Arrieta would maybe be the only exception simply because he's in such good shape and seems to possibly be a robot. I'm hoping Arrieta can dominate like usual on Monday and get some run support to put the Cubs up 2-1 going into Tuesday's game. Then I'd be OK with them maybe using 4 or 5 pitchers to pitch game 4. Get 2 good innings out of each pitcher ideally and save Lester for the NLCS if possible.

Said it before and I'll say it again. Ross is a great leader. Let him be a coach somewhere. DO NOT let him play on your team.

Looked awful last night. Not just at the plate, but letting a few low pitches that weren't even in the dirt get by him.
Agree entirely. Ross was garbage all around in Lester's start. He should have had three passed balls, in my opinion.

The whole concept of a dedicated catcher seems ridiculous to me. As if your stuff and your game as a starting pitcher is so specialized that you can't coach up anyone but "your guy" to catch you. C'mon. If you're an ace, you dictate the game, and the catcher should accommodate you. Lester seems to get crap for run support (what are the stats?). You would think he would want as much offense as he could get. Not his personal security blanket who's hitting well under the Mendoza line.

I'm with this idea. To emphasize some more, if it's an elimination game (either to avoid elimination or to finish off the Cards), you have to go all in on that game. Just get the whole thing done and reset for the next round.

If Lester pitches in game 4 Montero needs to start. Or give Schwarber a game behind the plate.
I'd be all for this, assuming Lester is on-board, which is doubtful. If Maddon tried to force the issue, which I'm not sure would align with his MO, we'd have a pouty pitcher calling for a bunch of unnecessary mound visits and blaming every missed pitch on his catcher.

I'd save Lester for a game 5(not a fan of short rest) plus would likely mean Lackey.
Need 1 of the big 2 saved for game 5.
No doubt.

It's so hard to pick a favorite Cubs rookie, they just keep taking turns being my favorite. Soler had awesome at bats all night, this was what I expected all year from him, but I'll gladly take it right now.

I think I'm down with it, but with a short leash. I like the idea of more Lester/Arrieta starts in the NLCS (pending victory, of course).

Also, if you pitch Lester in Game 5, you can't pitch him again until Game 3 in the NLCS. The only way he would get a second start in the NLCS is if it goes 7. Pitch him in Game 4 of the NLDS on short rest, and you get him for games 2 and 6 of the NLCS.

Lester has started 2 games ever on 3 days rest. 11 IP, 13 H, 6 BB, 6 R, 3 HR

So yea, Lester is not starting game 4 no matter what. Game 4 is essential a bullpen game where you hand the ball to your offense and Wrigley to helpfully win the series after Arrieta does his thing on Monday.

No matter what, the Cubs have the advantage now. Just go play

So start Lester on a short leash. If he sucks, you have your bullpen day knowing full well you can start Hendricks in Game 5 on normal rest.

Had a buddy remind me of a post I had on Facebook 2 years ago...

In 2013, the Red Sox won the World Series in year 101 of Fenway. I created a "101 year curse" and that meant the Cubs would win in 2015, the 101st year of the Cubs in Wrigley.

What's the limitations on wainwright?

Is he available Monday?

Regarding Lester I can't see based on general stats and his own stats with short rest why we'd throw him on short rest up 2-1.

Our bullpen should be very rested for game 4, so short leash Hammel, plus wood and Cahill sounds like a better option.

Having Lester available earlier in the nlcs would be nice I guess, but you have to get there, and with two Jake starts early in the series I feel good about either getting to game 7 or winning before that.
