They (the Northeast) get about 2-4 of these each winter season. It's simply a low pressure system that deepens rapidly as it moves up the coastline into the Atlantic. Depending on the location, it can mean everything from heavy rains to a blizzard. This one will be particularly strong, but the more Eastward track will keep most of the really bad weather out to sea.

I don't know what that is but I'm picturing a SyFy channel type storm with a tornado that is comprised entirely of bombs. Am I close?

What I've found after watching the nightly news for a few decades is they seem to exaggerate everything that happens in the NE and especially NYC.

Authorities are urging people to stay indoors as millions face below- and near-freezing temperatures Wednesday.
New York City has not gotten above freezing since Christmas Day.
Oh the hue manatee!

Sure they get low pressure systems but hurricane force winds? (Of course exaggerated as a poster previously said.)

I get around
Go Cyclones! We tore up the University of Chicago (and hence got our nickname) and now we're going to bomb the Northeast! We'll take care of business this time as we screwed up the last we were in NYC.

Edit: That was Northwestern University that we tore up and got the nickname "Cyclones". Thanks to Cycsk for pointing that out.

I was about to post the picture of mine but you beat me to it! Mine's 1969.

That one's not mine. It's from 1946 ! There are probably pictures of women that @BoxsterCy dated, though.

They stopped making Iowa Stat College ones well before that, at least that's what I heard.

My older sibs had them. I think I remember seeing one from the 90's, but I know they were a dying breed when I was there.
