LOVE both of these places. Latin King and Cosi Cocina are my two favorite Italian places in Des Moines, but Latin King is the one that gets all of the recognition.

Cosi is terrible. How dare you put it in the same sentence as LK. Holy crap.

For Pizza: NYC Pizza Cafe off Mills Civic in WDM. Best pizza in town.
Lucca in East Village for lunch.
Marino's off hickman and Merle Hay for good mom/pop pizza/pasta.
Echo Valley for a country club.
Francies off Fleur for a good small bar with food.

One of my new favorites is Mi Patria, an Ecuadorian restaurant which serves authentic Ecuadorian food. They serve a fish called "Corvina" which is fantastic. Very reasonably priced too. Here's a link:

For breakfast/lunch, I recommend "La Mie Bakery" which has the best breads/pastries in Des Moines and also has great egg dishes and sandwiches. Here's a link:

Mi Patria is great. I also like whatever that giant South American corn is they serve with everything.

What about Royal Mile? What about Johnny's? What about Mickey's?

See a trend??
Someone's PMS'ing. The OP just moved here so I doubt he knows about a lot of the places mentioned as he listed the Clipper under hidden gem.

He also had a question asking what are your favorite places so get your panties out of a wad.

I don't think that they're on the same level, I'd take LK a hundred times over Cosi Cocina - but CC is still better than any Italian we have in Ames, and I'd venture to say it's still the second best in Des Moines. What are the other options?

Well Cafe di Scala is better than Latin King and CC, so that makes it at least 3rd.

Hmmm I was never rude. Just said those spots are all popular and my family in NW Iowa who barely visit know where they are.

Thanks though... Didn't realize I was being that uptight.

Clipper is kinda a hidden Gem. I'm guessing if I talk to 15 people around town half wouldn't know about the place. I lived here for 6 years now and only found out about the place because of the High Trestle Trail.

Anyone big fans of Tumea and Sons??
