That is the sign that you want to work for a place. I bet it definitely made the interview a lot more entertaining - and probably more honest!

Interview for a class, not a job interview

Best. Interview. Ever. Never had so much fun doing homework before. :cute:

What old Ames restaurants that have since been closed do you miss most?

I'm going to guess we'll get a lot of Davinci's in here - their chicken phillies were awesome.

I also really liked that place that used to be across the street to the south from Aunt Maude's, probably 15 years ago - I just don't remember the name. I want to say it was called Garden Cafe, or Market Garden, or Salad Garden, or something like that? Does anyone else remember it?

Garden Cafe. I loved that place.

I also miss Ruttles. I really enjoyed their burgers.

LOL - well, that makes more sense with what you wrote, but I do like thinking of it at a job interview, too.

That reminds me of when I got roped into science fair my freshman year of high school (I totally phoned in my project, but still got a free day out of class, so it ended up being worth it). The girl I sat by had done this entire project on alcohol and its effects on motor skills (which had already been pretty well-established by that time, but I digress). I always thought that it was just a ploy to drink a whole bunch.

DaVinci's.

Rocky Rococo.

Panchero's, although I miss the loss in style more than the restaurant itself. Went to one in CR a few years back. It was not what I remembered.

Little Taipei if I read the thread correctly and it is closed.

Palermo's, I think the name of it was. Pizza place on LWay just east of Welch, in the area between the old People's and the old (Varsity?) theater, mid-90s.

O'Malley McGee's by a mile. *sigh*

...then DaVinci's.

Really miss O'Malley & McGee's as well...that is where I took my now wife for our first ever date.

Also miss Pizza Pit (I know, it's still there!). Worked there for 3 1/2 years in the mid 90's, and even after eating it all of the time, I still miss it today.

1 - Dugan's Deli on West St - Andrew's Chewy Bars anyone? Old Style on tap.

2 - Davinci's Campustown 292-3003, in case anyone forgot how to order a 12 inch cheese steak on wheat with hot peppers, mushrooms, and extra cheese.

3 - McGee's on Duff - great food and atmosphere in a wreck of a building.

4 - Thumb's UP! on Welch (YES - Welch) - Sunday unlimited spaghetti.

5 - Pizza House - Lincoln Way across from Friley - free refills on pop - forever. Actually their pizza at the time wasn't trendy so people talked it down but it is strikingly similar to Palermo's pizza today.

6 - Palmas' Greek Steakhouse on Duff - actually still in business on East 1st Avenue in Newton - and the steaks are still fantastic. Worth the drive, actually.

All good calls, but especially the Rocky Rococo! I see they still have several locations in WI. Have been tempted to drive up just to see how they are.

I lived right next to Dugan's...Reuben & potato salad; awesome! That place had great bands and a fun atmosphere at night; then you would walk in the next day for lunch and it seemed to be a deli (the key was not to look too closely).

And, the difference in the "day" and "night" crowd was at times, extreme.

So DaVinci's is gone? wow...I had no idea.

It is. I think about four years now - I want to say they got in trouble for selling alcohol to minors, but I could be totally wrong. It's too bad - they just had the best of everything. I miss their alfredo pizza, in addition to the chicken phillies.

DaVinci's closed over Christmas in 2004. As someone who had ordered online (a few too many times, probably), I got an e-mail while I was in Shreveport at Indy Bowl Part Deux. Basically said "We're closed effective immediately. Thanks for your patronage."

I haven't read the entire thread, but three come to mind.

  • There was a Mexican restaurant that was located where Dublin Bay is now (after originally constructed as the Mikado). For some reason, I can remember the original and current occupants, but can't recall the name of this iteration. At any rate, it was the best Mexican food in town, and the owner would give free sopapillas to regulars on occasion.

  • Wok Inn. Great food and a really nice staff.

  • Super Spud. 'nuff said.

There was a philly cheese steak place in west Ames kind of by a landry mat and wendy's It was ran by and english professor from philly. They were the bomb.

I think you're probably thinking of DiSalvo's Deli - open for a few years a few years back? The wife may be an English professor (I'm not sure?), but the husband is a computer tech. They're from the Philly area.

Ahhh, DiSalvo's. Great sandwiches. Owners were a riot, too. There was never anybody in there, though. Terrible location and poor signage. Really wish they would have lasted a little longer. I may have personally kept them afloat for a summer.

Oh man! And DiSalvo's deli. Real authentic Italian via Philadelphia deli with the most amazing cheesesteaks. Was really bummed when they went under!

For me and my family, Ruttles is the eatery we miss most. There aren't any diner type places aside from Perkins which gets old quickly. Ruttles had very tasty burgers, a very nice condiment bar, and some great ice cream treats. We didn't eat there at the end, so I don't know how things were then.

One restaurant I personally miss most is King's Drive-in; located where what used to be called the ISU Credit Union is now. Great onion rings and shakes.

Speaking of ice cream, I also miss the old Dairy King/Cyclone Inn located where Taco Bell is now. At two thirds the cost of Dairy Queen, you got one third more soft serve.

Ah, nostalgia...
