Ames restaurant you miss most?

For me and my family, Ruttles is the eatery we miss most. There aren't any diner type places aside from Perkins which gets old quickly. Ruttles had very tasty burgers, a very nice condiment bar, and some great ice cream treats. We didn't eat there at the end, so I don't know how things were then.

One restaurant I personally miss most is King's Drive-in; located where what used to be called the ISU Credit Union is now. Great onion rings and shakes.

Speaking of ice cream, I also miss the old Dairy King/Cyclone Inn located where Taco Bell is now. At two thirds the cost of Dairy Queen, you got one third more soft serve.

Ah, nostalgia...

dude, how long ago did you live in ames? I was there from 03-08 and don't remember any of these places?

the best place I used to eat on main street would have to be the grove... great breakfast and a delicious greasy burger that easily rivals culvers, but with a local flavor

Where are you that does not have a Quiznos. Saudi Aribia?

I've heard that McDonalds in saudi Arabia has a delicious Double goat flavored cheeseburger. but only men are allowed to eat it... the women are busy birthing and finding ways to show leg in burka forums

Me and my parents moved to Ames in Feb. of '63, so I pretty much grew up in Ames (Ames High class of '76). Kings drive-in was open in the mid sixties through the mid seventies. Dairy King was there when we first moved in and changed to the Cyclone Inn in the early seventies before it became a Taco Bell in the early eighties, I think.

I also remember the Mall having a Woolworth's five and dime store with a soda fountain. I remember eating a few sundaes there when I was a kid, or was that at the old Main Street location? It was located next to the old Sears store on the north side across from where Game Stop is now (GS and Diamond Dave's used to be a Hardees restaurant).

On Main Street, there was a Greek-American restaurant called Frango's that was real good and had live entertainment during the weekends. Across the street where Great Plains Sauce and Dough is now, was Tom's Grill that used to serve standard American fare.

Now I'm really showing my age, oh dear! :wideeyed::biggrin:

I live in Nevada now, so I'm not that out of touch. Just reminiscing. Now my faves are Hickory Park (great ribs and chicken) and Old Chicago (not to be confused with the crappy beer; great pizza and salads).

Anyone remember Henry's Hamburgers? It was an actual chain before McD's.

I wouldnt day Old C's beer selection is crappy, I'd just say it's a bit more diverse than what most in central iowa are accustum to.

You got it - used to be outside outside Target Plaza (Where Village Inn is just East of Grand on LWay) kitty korner from King's

Remember Griff's Burger Bar that was across the street?

King's Food Host had telephones at each booth that you would use to call-in your order. They had great onion rings.

dugan's deli and minsky's; whiskey river in the 80's was great; Lee, Mike and some of us other reprobates played broomball on a rec team after we were out of school. We had a legacy on the team who was the only student. Kamikazis from 9-12 and then hit the ice. We won the league. What a sham.............:biglaugh::biglaugh:

3 GREAT places...is Whiskey River closed?????

Pizza Pit and the Indian place that used to be up by the old theater. There was also a chinese place to the east of TGalaxy. Was under a building or something.

Surely, Pizza Pit has not closed...I just cannot believe that it would have closed...please tell me it is still open.

1 - Dugan's Deli on West St - Andrew's Chewy Bars anyone? Old Style on tap.

2 - Davinci's Campustown 292-3003, in case anyone forgot how to order a 12 inch cheese steak on wheat with hot peppers, mushrooms, and extra cheese.

3 - McGee's on Duff - great food and atmosphere in a wreck of a building.

4 - Thumb's UP! on Welch (YES - Welch) - Sunday unlimited spaghetti.

5 - Pizza House - Lincoln Way across from Friley - free refills on pop - forever. Actually their pizza at the time wasn't trendy so people talked it down but it is strikingly similar to Palermo's pizza today.

6 - Palmas' Greek Steakhouse on Duff - actually still in business on East 1st Avenue in Newton - and the steaks are still fantastic. Worth the drive, actually.

I skipped many a class getting diverted into Thumbs on the way down Welch heading to campus...most of my intake at Thumbs was of the liquid variety but they had tremendous waffle cut fries...at least they were tremendous after a couple of pitchers of beer. And Thursdays...75 cent GNTs at Thumbs...let the weekend begin!!

Yes, Pizza House...very under-rated and under appreciated.

Does anyone remember the tiny bar at the North Grand Mall? I can't remember it's name.

The Hallway. Little place towards the north end, east side.

dugan's deli and minsky's;

Minsky's in the Campustown location. I did like that one.

Anyone else old enough to remember the Green Pepper? (or something like that) Pizza place on Welch, can't quite remember what building or what's there now. Someplace to the north of Cy's Roost.

I haven't read the entire thread, but three come to mind.

  • There was a Mexican restaurant that was located where Dublin Bay is now (after originally constructed as the Mikado). For some reason, I can remember the original and current occupants, but can't recall the name of this iteration. At any rate, it was the best Mexican food in town, and the owner would give free sopapillas to regulars on occasion.
  • Wok Inn. Great food and a really nice staff.
  • Super Spud. 'nuff said.

Hey, hey...glad to see another shout out to Wok Inn!!
