What do I miss:
Buck burgers from People's, Paddy's, and Cy's.
McDonald's on Welch. My roomates and I lived off of $1 Big and Tasty's.
Burger King, Quiznos, and the Made-Rite, weren't they all in the same location?
Diamond Daves for their buck burgers and $2 Captain and Cokes.
The old Battles and Jimmy John's locations.
Pancheros, wasn't that in the Mickeys location?
The Godfathers that's now a funeral home?

La Fuente, and for me it is not close at all. The fajita quesadilla from there is the most heavenly thing to grace my palate

What was the Chines place on the back side of North Grand Mall? Kinda down by Sears. There was also the chinese place out on the west side across from Hyvee that got shut down for having roaches in the kitchen...we found out the day after we ate there.

I think House of Chen was back there by Valentino's. If I have my facts straight, they moved down to Lincoln Way (on the east side of town).

Sukothai!!!! It was this old thai place when I was in elementary school and it was soooooo good. Then the owner gambled away all her money and lost the restaurant.

Flame and Skewer, I bet? On the west side of the main entrance? They are still there, if you ever want to make a trip to NG - we'll occasionally make a trip there just for the gyros.

Flame n Skewer is a good place. Love the Zois Delight.

Mo still owns it and is a good Cyclone supporter. We went there last year and after we sat down I looked are the table next to us and all the football assistant coaches were there. Both Burnhams, Ash, Herman, Pope and of course Mo the owner.

Henry's Hamburgers

One of the signs in the window features the gut buster special - 5 hamburgers and a pound of fries for $1.30. I think that it was only a dollar when they still had 15 cent burgers.

Thumbs (UP!)... Welch... Thursdays...75 cent GNTs at Thumbs...let the weekend begin!!

Oh man... I'd tell all sorts of stories if I could remember them. Didn't they have Long Islands on special on the weekends? It was like 9 shots + mixer for 5 bucks in a mini pitcher with a straw. If you ordered a second one - they'd kick you out for being too drunk to make good decisions. It was basically, go in, get your Long Island and sip off it the rest of the night.

Gotta remember the drinking age was 19 back then. They had plenty of customers so they kicked the stupid drunks out pretty quick.

Their food was great - the pasta and stuff was tops.

  • There was a Mexican restaurant that was located where Dublin Bay is now (after originally constructed as the Mikado). For some reason, I can remember the original and current occupants, but can't recall the name of this iteration. At any rate, it was the best Mexican food in town, and the owner would give free sopapillas to regulars on occasion.
I know the place you mean - I want to say it was called Tequila's or something like that. Their salsa and rice were better than Fuente. It was there probably in 97 - 99?

Ahhh, DiSalvo's. Great sandwiches. Owners were a riot, too. There was never anybody in there, though. Terrible location and poor signage. Really wish they would have lasted a little longer. I may have personally kept them afloat for a summer.

Yeah, I work with the husband. They really wanted it to work out, but he was working his full-time job and still supporting the restaurant - I think they were a victim of the exact things you mention. It's too bad - they would actually mix the cheese in with the meat on their phillies.

House of Chen. In my opinion, best Chinese in Ames (although CHC is pretty close) - they moved from NG out onto East Lincoln Way, though, in a strip mall. Their chef's special chicken is amazing. I'm blanking on the name of the joint across from the Hy-Vee - it used to be Wok Inn, but now it's...? I've only eaten there once.

What was the 'fancy' San Francisco place up on the west end of downtown? Was across the street from the train station and the Garden thingy that went in later.

I think that was Lucallans (sp). Very gay with lots of rope lighting but did have an all you could drink champange Sunday brunch! Cost them lots of money on that one a couple of times! Couple of other oldies was The Amallgamated (sp) off south Duff. Pricey but good and out west past the drive inn theater were a couple good places-- one of which was in an old barn. Minskys was a classic and Dons deli in Cys Roost had great subs!

As a former Davinci's Cheese steak grill "chef", we made them all with love for you.

I'd go with Sukothai, that was my first introduction to Thai food and it almost killed me. Now I say bring the pain! I love Thai food.

I could use some more grease in my diet, so I miss Minsky's. A great dive.

There's still a Minsky's in Nevada, but it isn't quite the same. I think it was started by the same owners as the one in Ames, though?
