Don't you just love those? I haven't seen a commercial from them directed at our Iowa kids in forever and then all of a sudden you see them all over the place. Pretty obvious that they've figured out they're no longer able to bank on Iowa high school graduates attending Iowa "just because" as they could in the 80's and 90's.

I think you are close ... its because they are losing 10s of millions in funding based on in-state use of their institution. The UofI is having its golden goose taken away ... and rightfully administered.

It's not a diversity thing at all. It's just fun pointing out that u of i is largely made up of kids who couldn't get into their first choice school in Illinois.

And considering demographic trends in Iowa, all the state schools there better hope it continues.

Well yeah.

I mean we need somebody to actually attend u of i

But just to be clear - are you suggesting that we need to "import" students of a more diverse (and by this I mean minority) background? Interesting.

Not referring to race, gender, etc in this context. By diverse I mean anyone not from Iowa, at least in this argument.

I don't really have a dog in this fight other than one of my companies is based in Iowa and mainly hires Iowa residents.

I understand folks wanting Iowa taxpayer dollars to support Iowa residents. However, the funding shift is certainly a disincentive to bring in out of state students. That makes me nervous when looking at the talent pool coming out of Iowa universities. I would think that the schools would want to bring in the students with the most potential while also serving state residents...not being incented to choose one over the other.

I love how folks here seem to think that promoting diversity within Iowa is a negative.

It sounds like you want an Institution filled with Iowa kids who stay in Iowa. If it were Arkansas we would call it inbreeding.

I can't speak for anyone else but I do think diversity is important. I think most people see the hypocracy in some of U of I's actions lately.

Their "University for Iowa" campaign for example. In 2012, their incoming freshman class was composed of 45% Iowa kids. The year before that 43%. They are scrambling to get more Iowa kids in, not for the students' benefit but for the University's.

They've already begun to incorporate the Tigerhawk with the AIB in order to develop a new logo and mascot. I present to you the UIDM Mismanagers:

Looks like the announcement was surprise to the rest of the BOR members except Bruce Rastatter. Rastatter and Mason made the announcement without telling them.

On the surface - picking up 17.5 acres and property valued at 21.5 million, a 7+ million dollar endowment and only 1.4 million in debt - seems like a pretty damn good deal to me.

I'm sure there's a mountain of legal-ese to mess that all up, but like I said, on the surface. Particularly when you consider you can potentially relocate what is likely rented/leased space to more permanent surroundings for your existing MBA, MSW and whatever else is offered in Des Moines, as well as what I believe will be a rather popular undergraduate, commuter program.

It's a delicate balance. It's important to do a good job taking care of the ones who originally called Iowa home, but you won't be attracting any new talent to your state.

I grew up in WI. Went to undergrad at UW-Eau Claire. Iowa State gave me a full ride to grad school, and largely because of that I am now an Iowa resident. Had that not happened, I doubt very much that I would be living in Iowa currently.

This new incentive legislation makes me a bit nervous. Iowa will need good people to keep coming into the state if we are to continue growing. I think a lot of it starts at the college level, if you want to attract good out of state talent.

I don't understand what the owner(s) gain from gifting AIB to U of I?

Not quite. I really feel for the staff and faculty at AIB. This was a complete blindside that will not end well for most of them.

Yeah, I know someone who works there and they are not at all happy. It might end up working out OK, but it was a complete shock.

It's all about expanding UI's reach across the state, the Regents (controlled by Iowa backers) aren't satisfied with it and want to force the University to expand it's in-state presence (also the main factor behind the new funding model). Forcing more competition between ISU and UI worries me a bit , they have more connections and funds than we do.

I think I agree with you. I want to believe the main players in this have the best intentions but I'm a bit skeptical.

They needed more medical students and figured the AIB kids would be more qualified than what they were getting.
