I think the MOST important thing for college basketball success is your recruiting. Along with that......most recruits will go to a school where they have built a good relationship with at least some of the coaching staff, and likely with the head coach. You see it in virtually any interview while they are being recruited, and after they sign. "I had a good relationship with Coach(es) X." Many recruits will witness a practice or two, and some games, and see the coaching staff in action before they make their decision.
I'm not so sure that the old school yelling at players and "getting in their faces" works that well with today's players. It may in some cases, like with Izzo, Coach K, whoever......because you cannot deny their past success. But again, it may work too because they recruited players who can not only handle that kind of coaching, but who actually prefer it.
CFH has his style. The players he has recruited (which have been pretty good players, btw) have come here at least partially due to his coaching style. Players want to win, as bad as coaches (and fans) do. I doubt any of the players came here with the attitude of "CFH is an easy-going guy......he will let me slide". At least I hope not.
I also think we need to remember that this is only CFH's 3rd year of coaching anything. Yes, he has had some early minor success, and it seems like too many on here expect that just to happen every year. It won't. It's his 3rd year people! Not just as a head coach, but as a coach, period!
Tom Izzo spent one year as a high school coach, and then 17 YEARS as an assitant coach on the college level before his first college head coaching job at Michigan State. 17 years! He followed legend Jud Heathcote. Izzo went 55-36 his first 3 years. Bobby Knight coached a high school JV for one year as his first coaching job. He enlisted in the Army, and served as an assistant for 2 years then took over as head coach of Army. He was 51-21 his first 3 years. Coack K enlisted in the Army, and "coached" service teams for 3 years. When he got out, he joined Knight's staff at Indiana for a year. Then he became coach at Army. His first 3 years his record was 38-47. All 3 successful coaches. All 3 "get in your face" type coaches.
Then there is Brad Stevens. Started out as a volunteer working in Butler MBB office. Then took a job under Thad Matta the basketball operations for Butler for a year. Matta left, and Todd Lickliter gave Stevens his first real coaching job. He was promoted 6 years later to head coach when Lick left for Iowa. His first 3 year record? 89-15. The most success of any of them.
My point is CFH is still learning to coach, and it may be a little painful for us as fans at times, but we all know he is talented enough, and smart enough to figure it out. I think it is obvious that the system he is developing, and his style and personality is attractive to quality players. As fans, we have to be patient and give it some time. I mean come on, we gave McDermott 4 years......and he had head coaching experience already! CFH's record so far in 3 years? 52-32. About the same as Izzo's....and certainly better than Coach K's. Give it time people. I think ISU has something special here.....but it needs a little more time to fully develop.
