Do I think he should have bet on his team? No. Do I think that should prevent him from being in the hall of fame? No.

No one is saying he was a good person, but that should have little to no bearing on if he is in the HOF for his play on the field.

I do agree that Rose should not have bet on his team, but for the MLB to keep beating the betting drum while having totally sold out to the betting companies and casinos is total crap. You can't get 5 minutes into a game without a betting ad and the advertising at the ballparks have the same betting firms and casinos all over the place. Yes, you gave him a lifetime ban, which he agreed to. That's over now...put him in the Hall.

Hall of Fame debate about him will never die. I think he should be in based on what he accomplished on the baseball diamond. If we only knew half.the skeletons that were in others' closets, the Hall would be very empty I'm afraid.
I think he deserved what he got in life, but at the same time, I believe that price has been paid a few times over. One of the greatest baseball players that ever lived, and he deserves to be there, warts and all.

Isn't it a "permanent" ban, not "lifetime" ban?

And I agree that all of the betting ads in baseball is dumb, annoying, and frankly dangerous for the sport, but if you're going to have all the betting ads, I think you have more reasons to keep him out. All the betting ads are dangerous for MLB because a lot of fans are going to stop watching if they think the games are fixed. Having all these ads increases the likelihood that players/managers, etc. will bet (and potentially fix games) and it increases the likelihood that fans will think games are being fixed. As a result, MLB needs to make it absolutely clear that players/managers, etc. cannot bet on games. Keeping Rose out helps drive that point home. Letting him in now undermines that.

I know the all-star game meant more then, but it's still a glorified exhibition game. Kind of like how that play is going to look different in a spring training game than in game 7 of the World Series

couple of other media reactions / rememberances

Johnny bench’s interview gives a different prospective. Didn’t realize Pete was given second chance after second chance by baseball and the FBI and he thumbed his nose at them. He also thumbed his nose at Johnny Bench and Joe Morgan. Johnny absolutely loved Pete and did what he could do. I feel sorry for Johnny Bench. That man is hurting big time. He took a lot of flack for standing up for Rule 21. Yet people don’t realize he also tried to intervene for Pete. When Bench hears people say Pete never bet against the Reds he says when he didn’t bet he was defacto betting against the Reds. Never thought about it that way.

I forgot that Pete Rose, thought it maybe just happened today. Whoops.

Who else in this MLB permanent ineligible list.

Robbie Alomar and the Astros Assistant GM are on the list. I am pretty sure some guy from the Padres bet on baseball a few years ago and got banned. Not sure if this move pulled all of the other Black Sox off the list but if not they would all be there.

The list is fluid as guys like Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle and Fergie Jenkins have all been "banned" from baseball at some point.

I think the new rule is that the bans expire on death, so all the other members of the Black Sox are in as well

Mays and Mantle were banned because they worked for casino's at the time. So they could not hold an MLB job while they also represented gambling, but that is pretty much out the window now, as gambling is all over professional and college sports.

Put Rose into the HOF along with Joe Jackson, be sure to list after their accomplishments that they were given a lifetime ban for betting on the game.
