Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magic

I'm shocked no one has posted this yet, unless I missed it. This album rocketed RHCP to the top of the charts with multiple popular singles. The entire album is great as well. I remember listening to their earlier stuff after this and being impressed by their funky origins. This album added to that with some ballads while still keeping the funk.

Give It Away - Their first mega single. The video blew up and that was that. They were superstars. A great funky tune that speaks to their roots.

Under The Bridge - Their first huge ballad. It showed the softer side and their range. A deep look at their struggles with addiction.

Suck My Kiss - My personal favorite from the album. Back to the funk roots.

Breaking the Girl - My favorite RHCP ballad. Under the Bridge got overplayed, but this one always felt fresh and soulful to me.
There's also THIS connected to the song:
Beavis: This sucks, change it!
Butthead: Shut up, fart knocker, this is cool!
Beavis: Who is this?
Butthead: Dude! It's the Red Hot Chili Peppers!
Beavis: No way! Why are they playing like this?
Butthead: Uh, like, Chicks like this kind of music. This is the song that the Chili Peppers play when they want to get chicks.
Beavis: Ohh! Ok, this is cool.

Can't believe this slipped through my searching. I thought this album came later in the 90's. If there was a year that an album this good could get overlooked it would be this one. Man 1991 was loaded.

Smashing Pumpkins - Gish

Last one before lunch. Kind of a forgotten album after Siamese Dream blew upin 93. I remember finding this CD after falling in love with Siamese Dream. Gish is the SP debut full album and has a more raw quality than Siamese Dream. I personally think it has some of the best SP songs on it, outside of Siamese Dream. Meloncollie and the Infinite Sadness was hugely successful but I always felt that it was too much of a departure from what I loved most about SP. For me it goes Siamese Dream, Gish, Meloncollie, then every other SP release.

I Am One - The opening track and a huge dive into the SP sound. Thrashing throughout.

Rhinoceros - This song is a good early example of SPs depth. A song with equal parts soft ballad and interspersed killer guitar.

Siva - A rocking tune with a melodic interlude. A Corgan classic

Bury Me - Another great tune that is classic Smashing Pumpkins style.

S-Dream was in my heavy rotation for a while, I don't know why I didn't dig back into "Gish" after that. I had heard some of it when it was new, maybe at that time it didn't grab me so it became an afterthought. I'll have to re-explore.

Oh I beg to differ. The entire album is a masterpiece. Top to bottom. One of my all time favorite albums to listen to in it's entirety. I would wholeheartedly recommend a full album listen for any music lover.

Other monumental songs from this album include:

YYZ - One of the all time great instrumental rock songs. Truly epic.

Red Barchetta - Another classic and one of RUSH's best story telling singles.

Witch Hunt - A haunting tune. I remember my older brother playing this when I was a little kid and it scaring the **** out of me. I later came to adore the song.

Yes! Took me too long to find this!

So, I'll admit, I'm biased - all my Rush material (CDs, DVDs, tour shirts, tattoo, etc.) will be buried with me. That being said, this is still a fantastic album if you can't get into any other Rush. A masterpiece, indeed!

2112 is my other favorite RUSH album. Just blows your mind whole when you dive right into it.
Again I have my older brother to thank for my RUSH fandom. Thanks broski!

A Tribe Called Quest - Low End Theory
ATribeCalledQuestTheLowEndtheory.jpg

Unfortunately I wasn't enlightened enough to hear this record when it came out, being a white boy from Iowa and all. But as my hip-hop education evolved I came to love A Tribe Called Quest. Their rhymes and beats are smart and fierce. Unfortunately this genre of hip-hop took a big hit when gangsta rap took over, but the Tribe was doing it right for many many years. Great use of jazz hooks and other great beats.

Check The Rhime - The lead single off the album and a great sample of the Tribes work.

Jazz (We've Got) / Buggin' Out - The following video combines two great songs from that album. A smooth flow on Jazz that goes into the funky beat of Buggin Out.

Scenario - Featuring members of the group Leaders of the New School, Charlie Brown, Dinco D, and some guy named Busta Rhymes. Busta would go on to greatness after Leaders fell to the wayside. This was one of the biggest appearances for Leaders with an established group like The Tribe. You could tell that Busta was a superstar in the making. One of my all time favorite Tribe tracks.

1:10 Brown
1:58 Dinco
2:28 Q-Tip
3:07 Busta Rhymes

Someone pointed this out in the Youtube comments for Scenario (Yes I read the comments)

All of these albums weren't just released in 1991. They were released on THE SAME DAY!
September 24th, 1991

A Tribe Called Quest - The Low end Theory
Nirvana - Nevermind
Sound Garden - Badmotorfinger
RHCP - Blood Sugar Sex Magic

And yes I would have shared Nevermind if it hadn't been shared already.

Speaking of Busta Rhymes and Leaders of the New School. Their debut album dropped in 1991. They would follow it up with another album in 1993 before breaking up with Busta going solo.

It's still a darn good album with the following being my favorite song and probably their most notable single.

De La Soul - De La Soul Is Dead

Since I'm on the topic of classic hip-hop, I'll continue with a group that I don't think ever really got their due respect. The sophomore effort from De La Soul. Sadly I haven't been able to find it streaming anywhere because Tommy Boy records did the group dirty. They had success with their first album featuring their best known single "Me Myself and I", but this album features a ton of good tracks. Unfortunately they are hard to find now.

Fishbone - The Reality of My Surroundings

One of the preeminent ska bands, Fishbone was one of the groups that first got me into ska. This album was one where they branched out and did more rock, soul, and R&B. Great stuff even if it doesn't have as many classic ska offerings. Not my favorite Fishbone album, but a great album from 91 (that I stole from my older brother. There's a theme here if any of you missed it.)

Everyday Sunshine - The best song on the album with plenty of horns and a little extra soul.

Sunless Saturday - One of the more heavy rock tunes on the album. A great song.

A$$whippin / Housework - Back to a great ska tune with the A$$whippin intro attached to it.

Fight The Youth - The lead track on the album and another rock heavy tune

Blues Traveler - Travelers and Thieves

And another submission that most probably have never heard of, even if they have heard of the band. This release came out before their breakthrough in 1994 with their album "Four".
I originally noticed this album in my brothers CD collection because of the bada$$ fantasy fiction album art.

The music is also quite awesome.

All In the Groove - Classic Blues Traveler style on this one

Onslaught
- Super funky and rock infused track.

Sweet Pain - John Popper shows off his vocal chops in an intense ballad.

As far as 1981 goes...2 outstanding albums were released very late 1980 that many people link with 1981...they are: John Lennon's Double Fantasy and Bruce Springsteen's The River. BOTH are incredible and both sold a lot of copies...most of those sold in 1981 even though they were 1980 releases. I wanted to include those album originally but thought I best not due to their actual release date.

@cyhiphopp put me in the place to put some early 90s hip hop on my shuffle and go on a run.

Dillema:
Can't run due to nagging calf strain.
Don't have any of those albums in my itunes any more.

There are a handful of really good songs on Blur's debut album Leisure, but There's No Other Way is definitely the standout.

Blur - There's No Other Way

I had that one on my side-burner list. Since you broke the mold, I'll piggyback a couple. ... A bit redundant or shoegaze-y at times, "Leisure" wasn't as dynamic as what was to come for Blur, but it was a damned strong start.

1981 brought to music Duran Duran whose self titled debut album would introduce a sound that came to basically define the 80s. Their follow up "Rio" would be more successful, but overall there are some good songs on this as well.
