Crazy Idea-
Sign Pujols (for cheap).
Let him play some Corner outfield spots(switch with young'ns for Defence, late in games), Pinch Hit, and DH for AL games?
Can't be much worse than:
OF Williams is sub .200
OF Bader is a ????

Probably wouldn't be much worse than Carp at 2B.

Shoot. I was kind of hoping that he might come on the market next year and since the NL will most definitley have the DH, St. Louis could sign him for that role. Lord knows he would be better than Matt Carpenter!

Pujols released by the Angels. One of the best ever. I hope he can get on with someone else this season (if he's interested).

Crazy splits on his 11 years with the Cardinals and 10 with the Angels. In hindsight the Cards made the right decision not to dish out that huge contract for him as they got the best half of his career and didn't strap the franchise financially with a ridiculous long term contract.

The first 11 years was like having Hank Aaron in the lineup. Since in Anaheim he's been about 25 HR, 90+ RBI and .245-.250 hitter. That isn't too bad either. He still puts the wood on the ball and doesn't strike out a lot. He's just a big, slow runner.

Albert went from being an absolute monster at the plate, to a very good, above average MLB player. His first 11 years in the league was better than almost every modern player has had. Without a doubt a first team HOFer, its sad watching a player with the skills that he processed go out like this, hopefully he does not pull a Steve Carlton and jump from team to team and just retires.

Anyone knowledgeable on the MLB reduction of Minor League teams? I assume with this reduction that a corresponding number of annual signed players would drop. The freak Covid 19 shut down of our society really worked to the Owners favor in the public’s reaction to this change.
The MLB Draft was five rounds last year, it will be twenty this year. And, scheduled much later, at the All Star break.

My impression at the moment is that even though there are substantially fewer teams, the talent across the board is even more diluted.

I’ve been following minor league baseball for over thirty years. I can’t see that thinner talent level working well for player development—and I’m guessing owners and management aren’t terribly thrilled, either.

So, where will these players be placed with the reduction of minor league teams?

I bet he’ll go to the white Sox or some team like the tigers long enough to get to 700. Would love to see him take an at bat in a Cardinals uniform one more time but I doubt it will happen. I was lucky enough to see him in person hit his home run when he returned to Busch.

He isn’t getting to 700. He is at 667.

You mean, this year?

I’m guessing that’s the reason the draft is a month later. They aren’t expecting those players to play. College players could go to low class A teams, but the HS kids will probably go to the Florida/Arizona complexes. Again, as a guess.

There’s a Dominican Summer League for really young international prospects, but I haven’t really heard any more than that.

Angels still overpaid substantially for him though at the time. 10 years ago a 10 year $240 mil deal is probably about the equivalent of paying someone close to $40 mil a year now probably. The Cardinals were smart, they wanted to pay him for the player he was going to be in the last 10 years of his career not the 1st 10 years. Cubs are realizing this could be the same situation with Rizzo right now who will be 32 in August, He's a fan favorite, gold glove 1B who hits about 24-30 HR and 100+ RBI while batting around .280. They aren't going to commit to a big long term deal to a guy that is going to start to regress here soon for a team that will be rebuilding. While I hope they can find some middle ground and keep him around another 3-5 years at a reasonable price I worry that since he's already taken a team friendly deal during his prime years he's going to outprice himself and Cubs may have to let him walk. It sucks as a fan when you get attached to a player and don't want to see him wearing another team's uniform but the longer they go without signing him to an extension the more I am preparing myself that my current favorite Cubs player may finish his career somewhere else.

Albert is literally the slowest player in baseball. As bad as Carp is in the field, Albert is a gigantic liability on defense. Unless it’s hit right at him, he cant field a thing.

It’d be cool for them to sign him to end his career, but I don’t see that happening.
