I’d be surprised if JP hasn’t already got his new coach in hand and the announcement will be made after elimination in the NCAA tournament. The only question is getting the message to the handful of players that need to be retained & likewise to any desirable recruits. The Final Four is an annual celebration in the coaching fraternity & a rumor mill. Our current players & recruits (& parents) are currently being bombarded with greener pastures. It’s a circus & not a good spin for ISU basketball.

He left it as good or better than he found it and left a good coach behind to run it. Steve is leaving a steaming pile for some poor sap to try and fix.

This isn't a "TJ vs Prohm" thing going on. We are hashing out who we think can build this thing back up and right now and TJ outside of being a homeboy doesn't have much going for him. Because every argument you can make for him you can also make for a dozen other coaches and..........Steve Prohm.

Because if I was the coach right now with 0 wins, on the way out the door and the only two applicants were Steve Prohm from Murray State and TJ Otzelberger from UNLV.....you going to tell me that it's TJ all the way based on his resume?

Coaches still move at that time. What was unclear about what I typed there?
Coaches will make moves to coach a top 10 team and try to take it farther. We aimed instead at TJ and Prohm. There's no "maybe" about whether we went cheap or not. We went cheap instead of aiming higher.

We don't disagree there. My point is that judging a hire of Prohm against a theoretical possibility of hiring (present day) Nate Oats away from Alabama (for one example) is going to set you up for disappointment.

We'd all be thrilled with the second scenario, but it's 99.9999% going to be a hire of a current HC at a mid-major.

Between those two? It’s TJ no contest. Worked for Romar, McDermott and Hoiberg. Acknowledged recruiting ability. Two head coaching stints with multiple NCAA appearances. Prohm’s Murray resume doesn’t hold a candle to TJs current resume. If you’re willing to be objective. The only mark against TJ is this season.

He was one of the leaders of the keep Rhoads debate as well too. Just who he is at this point

LOL. Willingly supported Rhoads that last year. But as the season unfolded it became apparent that he should be fired. Especially after that K-State debacle. Rhoads had to go. And I was for Campbell from the beginning as a replacement.

I willingly supported Prohm at the beginning of the year. But knew this would be Prohm’s last year within a few games. And I will support whomever JP hires. I will give them a chance and support them. If they fail, that’s on them and they will be replaced. Same thing goes with TJ. Or whoever is the replacement for Prohm.

My main concern with TJ is that no other P5 schools appear to be knocking at his door or rumored to be...That worries me a bit.

I find it very hard to believe that there won't be many Mid Major coaches picking up the phone to call JP. I can name 2-3 Mid Major coaches off top of my head who i'd seriously consider first who I think are rising stars.

I'm not saying TJ couldn't be successful at ISU...But I think the risk is higher with TJ.

I think TJ worked with Romar at Washington and I believe is assuming Prohm is getting the boot.
TJ was at neither place when the coach got fired and he’s been gone from here for years. Maybe that’s why Prohm can’t coach his way out of a wet paper bag.

I think the concern about TJ is people wanting some “excitement” in a coaching search. If Georges Niang was in the mix message board fans would be creaming themselves with excitement.

We can't make that kind of hire now. We're in the dumps. I'll agree on that.

How much do you want to bet it’s negotiated? Again, why do you think they’re just now working on this. Do you think Prohm is walking into a meeting and saying “hey, remember when we talked about common ground? You thought 0-8 was bad? Well, see how low I can go? what I can do next year? 2-21 next year or full buyout.”

That’s the great thing about allowing the return to be viewed as a possibility to a coach not exactly thrilled to come back. The full buyout and terms are viewed as not yet an option.

I get that you think Prohm should call Jamie’s bluff. Even though Prohm doesn’t want to go through another season like this, he should make JP fire him. Fortunately they’re not just now having conversations after finishing 2-21.

I'll say this. Your take on Prohm's buyout is not the worst one on this site.

That would be the one where Nebraska would be willing to discount the money owed to them to give up Fred and their recruits to return to Iowa State.

Listening to this now. Randy and Travis. I'm looking forward to it and enjoying thus far, because I think both have the freedom to be a little more honest.
