so help me understand. the hawks preferred to forfeit the match vs. giving up an ugly loss at that weight? are there less points for a forfeit vs. a pin?

They knew they were going to lose 197 so they decided to forfeit instead of lose one on the mat. Gave up more points but probably "looks better" to them in their eyes. Both a forfeit and a pin are 6 points but if we would have just won by a decision it would have been less than 6 points. Like Dresser said it was a chicken blank move and not something our staff would have done

Same amount of points for a fall and a forfeit. 6 points. Brands would rather concede the forfeit than give the isu fans who showed up for an assured beatdown any sense of actual victory. Because, he is a chicken s***.

We took a beating. I believe we had offense for one period in one match (1st-133). I hope we can turn it around at the Big 12's.

Thanks for the blog post Chris! Jacqueline is doing a wonderful job as well.

Glad you got the chance to make it out to a dual and starting to pick up more and more interest in the sport.

Now about the meet....woofta. I maybe wrong but didn't Iowa 197 have one sick and the other that was still dinged up with no one to fill that gap. I could understand not risking further injury this close to the postseason. Us here at ISU should know about those type of situations.

Despite the results of the past two duals, I'm optimistic for the future. I believe Dresser has a method for wrestling success and when the wrestlers follow his program, good things will happen. He has a great track record. One thing he cannot change immediately is the talent in the room. This comes through recruitment. We lost some top recruits and wrestlers this past year, but we have some good ones coming on board. In addition, we are losing only one senior starter.

You are correct about the 197 pounders they brought, but they had at least 2 guys on the roster that were not given the chance to wrestle.

Good job Chris Williams! I didn't know you had it in you. You've always came across to me as a sports snob who looked down on college sports outside of the big 2 (or 3 if count WBB), but you're on your way to redeeming yourself in my eyes.

If this is the only dual you've seen in the last 10 years, you could not have picked a worse one. Aside from a handful of meetings out of state at the National Duals (RIP), I've seen every Cy-Hawk dual since 1981 and this one was by far ISU's worst performance that I've seen in the series (22 takedowns to 1).

Ironically I find it too to be one of the most interesting eras in our long and storied history. No other Cyclone coach has taken the job knowing he had to rebuild. As a fan base we're in uncharted territory.

Just 2 seasons ago we finished in the Top 15 for a 4th straight year and even that was way, way below where we had been for decades. I don't think anyone could have seen us falling this far. The good news is we are better now than we were a year ago but yesterday's dual and last weekends embarrassing beatdown we suffered at UNI really shows how far we have to go.

I think Dresser's beef with Brands is that he thinks that Brands "ducks" from difficult situations. Whether that's true or not, depends on each person's viewpoint.

The background deals with the National Dual matches at the end of the year. Basically, the National Duals are "bowl"-style dual meets, pitting the highest ranked Big Ten teams against the highest ranked non-Big Ten squads.

In 2016, Dresser's Virginia Tech squad beat NC State to claim the ACC title and assumed that they would be sent to the higher ranked dual match-up. However, when the match-ups were announced, VT ended up with #8 Michigan and NC State got #2 Iowa. Dresser was very vocal about this - called out the NWCA (who sets up the match-ups) and claimed he was lied to about how the match-ups would be determined. Also called the Brands brothers a bunch of oranges (a substitute for the word "p*ssies") and claimed that they knew VT presented a tougher match for them and talked the NWCA into switching the match up. Really pushed the idea that Iowa was afraid to face VT, The NWCA's official statement was, even with the loss to VT, NC State was the higher ranked team in the coaches' poll, so they got the match-up with the higher-ranked Iowa.

In 2017, after all the regular season meets were finished, the format should have matched up (#5) Virginia Tech against (#3) Iowa at Virginia Tech. Instead, Iowa was matched up against the lowest ranked team - #23 Edinboro. Why? No one seems to know (unless something more came out that I'm not aware of). Even Cael Sanderson pointed out that the agreed upon format was for the top 8 ranked Big Ten teams to be matched up against the top ranked teams from the other conferences.

Again, Dresser accused Brands of "ducking" a tough match-up. Supporters of Brands claim he refused to wrestle at Virginia Tech given the bad feelings from when he left as head coach at Virginia Tech to take the Iowa position. I don't know that Brands ever spoke out.

Basically, Dresser thinks Brands is afraid to suck it up and face difficult situations and probably thinks that the 197 forfeit is just another example of that attitude.

Wrestling drama - gotta love it!

Dresser is right about this:

Brands is afraid to suck it up and face difficult situations and probably thinks that the 197 forfeit is just another example of that attitude.

Sports snob?!?!?! I'm a NASCAR and UFC guy!! That's as blue collar as they come! For real though, I've watched plenty of duals. Just haven't gone to them. But yes, yesterday was brutal indeed.

Who are going to be the NASCAR fan favorites of the future with Jr, Gordon, Stewart, and after Johnson retires?

I was a big Bill Elliott fan back in the day so Chase is my guy now. It's reinvigorated my love for the sport to be honest. Really big fan of Kyle Larson too. Any of the dirt guys I tend to root for. Lots of young talent in the sport these days.

I was a Stewart fan. All the constant changes to the point system kind of lost my interest the past 5-7 years.
