He may not be specifically "scared" of ISU, but he doesn't like us or any school that uses our approach. We offer kids early and often and that is at odds with Texas and other schools who take a slower approach to recruiting. There are kids that big schools used to be able to string along with the promise of an offer in the future and now schools like ISU, and others, are throwing offers at them, giving them something to think about before the big boys get around to them.
Our staff is putting in work scouting hundreds upon hundreds of kids, which is way more than Texas wants to scout. And we are finding really good kids like David Montgomery, who probably would have gone to a MAC school if Campbell hadn't have swooped him up.
We got Joseph Scates this year, who ISU got in on early and stayed with, even when big programs shied away due to academic concerns. These kinds of recruiting wins pile up and build momentum for the future.
Texas wants to sit there and offer the top kids in Texas, get them signed, and then clean up on other prospects that might take a little more scouting. But teams like ISU have been on those guys for a year and suddenly that late Texas offer doesn't look as good when Campbell is preaching loyalty and the faith he has in these kids.
Schools like Texas would rather everyone did things the old fashioned way. Scout kids and only offer a certain number of schollies to your top targets. Then, if you don't get them, move on to your backup plans, and so on. That leads to teams like ISU striking out with great recruits, getting some decent recruits, and filling in with 2 star depth guys. Campbell and staff are getting out there and talking to EVERYONE and if they get a hit from a great recruit they will accept that commit right away. But they are in that kids ear early and often, while Texas and others look for their top 30 that they really want to offer.
We might end up only stealing a few super stars from big schools, but we will also take a lot of their backup plans. And with the staff of motivators we have, we can turn those "backup" guys into damn good Big 12 football players.
Look at Brock Purdy. Yes ATM and Bama wanted him after they missed on early elite prospects, but he stuck with ISU because we believed in him much earlier than that and the staff sold him a vision where he would be a big contributor at ISU, not just someones fallback kid.
