That is one area I will not compromise. No motels and no shady hotels. Ever since bedbugs made a comeback, I am freaking out about running across them. Holiday Inn Express or Hampton for me on the cheaper side, but love to stay at nice hotels.

I hope everyone takes this stance, and the prices continue to plummet.

Oh my sweet Jesus, my wife does this too. A few weeks ago, so picked up some cage-free eggs at the farmer's market for like $5.50 for a dozen. I informed her that if she wanted to do that, she needed to get a raise because we'll be broke with the amount of eggs we eat.

As a chicken farmer, I appreciate you buying the cage free eggs...more money for me! Seriously though, there is absolutely no difference in nutrition and taste between cage vs. cage free and brown and white. If this trend towards cage free continues, get used to paying a lot more.

Mine would be vehicles, I drive old run down vehicles because I don't really care, but I do get nice vehicles for my wife because happy wife = happy life I guess.

Parking. I've wasted a ridiculous portion of my life (and expensive gas) looking for a free place to park.

We only have one grocery store in town, a HyVee. Because they have a monopoly, their prices are crazy high. The stuff in the storewide sale ad they mysteriously don't have, like they have run out of it as soon as the ad comes out. One of my kids did an econ project that involved comparing the cost of a gallon of milk at our HyVee versus HyVees in neighboring towns, as well as other stores in those towns. A gallon of milk at our HyVee cost 77 cents more that the next highest store.

As a result, I drive 20 miles each way and do most of my shopping for a week at a Fareway in a neighboring town. We use the local HyVee like a convenience store, when just an item or two are needed.

Have you compared receipts? You probably don't make up the difference in gas cost, but the 40-minute round trip would be enough for me to stay local.

Hy-Vee will give rain-checks for their always-gone sale items, which is probably the only reason they haven't gotten sued for bait-and-switch yet.

I buy new cars, put down as little as possible, and finance at 0% for as long as possible. I get grief every time I post that, but time-value of money and opportunity cost are tough concepts.

Cage free eggs - that's the dumbest thing ever. I mean really, why would you need to put eggs in a cage?

I only have to buy two or three items at Fareway to make up the cost of gas. Car gets 36 miles a gallon on highway. There is some kind of mustard the husband likes that costs over two dollars more at our HyVee than Fareway. And our HyVee knows the rain check thing is a hassle and you will most likely forget about it or lose it by the time they stock the sale items. When we lived in West Des Moines years ago, I used to drive to a Fareway in Urbandale and with metro traffic, that trip took just as long if not longer, even though the miles were much less.

My real answer is cars... .I have a near zero ego with what cars I own/drive. Last car I bought (this summer) was a 1999 Dodge Minivan with 110,000 miles on it for $2700.00 (good shape, new tires, etc). Previous car was purchased 12 years ago.

Maybe after the kids are out of HS, I'll buy a decent car..... maybe.

I'm cheap with everything. Especially foods. I think our pantry/fridge is 95% store brand.

As I get older, I'm less cheap with things. Hotels for sure, now.

I also buy very expensive beer.

I know I am going to offend someone with this comment but what is the deal with car colors?

I mentioned to my wife's cousin and her spouse* how stupid it was that people go to the ends of the earth trying to find that used car that is just the right color and usually spend extra for it. I don't care about car color. A car is a tool, not a status symbol. They then proceeded to tell me how important having the right color car was. SMH

For most vehicles, I don't care too much about the color. But for my "toy" car, it had to be blue. And not just any blue, the perfect shade of blue.

My truck? I took the one they had on the lot, which happened to be gray. Would have taken it if it were red, black, white, or whatever.

That's crazy. Regular eggs have been $.50-$1.00/doz
