Translation, it was a judgement call that went against ISU. It didn't decide the game and Rhoads could have challenged the spot. But if they stop play to review every half yard, we will have 5 hour games.

This wasn't a screwjob. We had 2 downs to get 1 yard. Why do ISU fans continue to pass the buck and blame officials for things within our control?

Its not specifically that play its all the plays the didnt go in our favor!! Name me 1 play that we got the favorable call??????? You can't, im not defending Rhoads by any means in saying he should have called a timeout. But he should'nt had to in that scenario that the line judge was so close to the play! When you constantly get screwed it's hard to overcome all the BS and upset any team. If this was happening to Bama, FSU, OSU, or any other power the national media would be all over this. This is something that is happening way to much and I wish we would pull out of the Big 12! If JP doesn't notice that the team could be competitive in any league then he needs to go as well. Recruits come to teams who they know will go to a bowl game, ISU is just as good as half of the teams that are bowl eligible. Osborne at Nebraska was always scared that if they had conference reallignment that they would be in trouble and that is why they got out. Texas officials and the Squawk Bowlsby doesnt help. Just pure BS to love watching this team compete and not have a fair playing field.

Well, normally the whole "let's save time" thing would work. However, these officials proceeded to take time to measure for the first down AFTER WE LOST A YARD on 4th down.

What bugs people is the fact that we shouldn't have even had to face that situation since we GOT THE FIRST DOWN THE PRIOR PLAY. That is the point.

Of course we should be able to get one yard on two plays... I get it. We shouldn't have even been in that situation in the first place.

Kind of like people saying we should have just bucked up and beat KU in Hilton after the GN no call on the KU charge that allowed them to tie it at the free throw line. After all, we still got to play overtime with them. Should have just gutted it out and won it in overtime, right? Fact of the matter is that we had already won it in regulation if it weren't for the refs.

Same thing here on a lessor scale. We already had the first down. Having to get one yard in two plays doesn't matter.

Here’s the statement:

...big tall text...

What about where it states:

"Coaches are granted measurements upon request outside of two minutes when the ball is marked within a yard of the yard-to-gain..."

Rhoads has stated the coaching staff noticed the spot PRIOR to the 3rd down snap, which occured with 2:15 left. So, why did he not call a time-out or request a measurement? He could have at the very least called a time-out to correct the play call that was run on 3rd down.

The blunder lies on the coaching staff as much as it does on the officials.

Great point. I think it has more to do with the hatred of Rhoads and the losing. Its a lot easier to stand on your high horse when the program is a loser. The fact is, we did get screwed in that game. It was pretty evident early on that we weren't going to get any favors. We already ruined OSU's perfect season in 2011. No way does the conference allow that to happen again. You can separate your hatred of Rhoads with the fact the refs blew a lot of calls in that game. If they don't over turn the Ryen TD, the game is tied and we are never in the situation we were. That was screw job #1. And it only goes against a team and program with nothing to lose already. If you can't admit that, you are just being an antagonistic *****.

Probably because he was out of timeouts...

I agree with you. But how many times does a bad or good spot (within half of a yard) happen during a game? A dozen? 20+? I know it happens a lot. Per the rules, they don't stop to review all of these because 1) the coaches can challenge them and 2) they will review if it happens on 3rd or 4th down at times and 3) it has to be a very obvious bad spot during a big play in the game. It was a bad spot but it wasn't a game deciding or game altering play.

The KU basketball charge call was different as that play almost certainly decided the outcome of the game. This one did not.

I guess I'm more of a "don't leave it in the officials hands" kind of person than a "blame the officials for everything" person.

What other plays in that game? The one where the ball hit the ground on a touchdown and was reversed? That was the right call. Close but correct.

We've gotten the short end of several bad calls (Texas, KU come to mind) but spotting the ball a half yard short on 2nd down wasn't one of them IMO.

Thought there were more questionable plays made by Okie State that were not even reviewed. Replay booth is very selective in plays they review. Generally if it is a good play by Iowa State........review it for possible overturn. Okie State.....don't review it unless the Ref call on the field is against them. Simple formula to follow.

Yea this one is on the coaches for being too dumb and dense to realize what the down and distance was. Just like not centering the ball for the game winning field goal at Toledo. Sometimes it seems our staff just lacks intelligence.

Did anybody notice the amount of poor spots we seemed to get during the game? At one point they brought the chains out late in the fourth (i believe) and we didn't get the first down by about a foot. While the teams were switching out offense/defense the ref. walked over to the ball and moved it forward another foot... Why would he do that?

We were still down 4 points, even if we did get the first down. What did you see in the second half or overall what have you seen from CPR that shows you ISU was going to score to take the lead?

Nothing really, to be honest. That wasn't the point i was trying to make though.

It just seems (notice i said "seems") that we are consistently in positions where we are having to overcome "no big deal" officiating situations when they happen. Those add up over the course of a game.

If they had given us the first down on the second down play... i still don't think we would have won. But there is no way to know that for sure since they spotted the ball all crazy for some reason.

I can't think of a time in football specifically where I have watched a game and thought "whew" we got a break on that call. Have you?

The people defending the refs are forgetting it's their responsibility to make sure the game is fair and competitive. Unfortunately that isn't the case for us. I don't even know why we're arguing about this? We have three letters of apology and even our supposed to smart AD blew a gasket over it on the record, something that very rarely happens.

I can think of multiple times in watching ISU football where I thought ISU got a break, such as a bad pass interference call that gave ISU a first down. I can not think of specific instances because I tend to forget about them once the game is over.

Tell me about all the times Kansas has lot to ISU because of one or two bad officiating calls. Tell me about the time the same thing has happened with a marquee program against ISU football.

Point is, bad calls happen all the time. KU basketball and marquee football programs are usually able to play through them and not let them affect the outcome of the game.

ISU football sucks, and when we lose so many close games, those calls become the forefront. Truth is our coaching staff has yet to figure out how to overcome bad calls.

Bad calls are like the weather or field conditions. You can do nothing about them except play through.

Here’s the statement:

“Game officials determined the second-down completion to be short of the yard-to-gain making it third-down. National guidelines are for replay not to shut the game down to review spots on first or second down unless there was an obvious error, which was not the case here even though the spot appears to be short of where the receiver went to the ground. Coaches are granted measurements upon request outside of two minutes when the ball is marked within a yard of the yard-to-gain and the Referee did not have reason to feel the spot was incorrect to call for a measurement himself. Although not general practice for replay to stop the game on first or second down, there are situations at certain times of the game that allow flexibility from the national guideline even if an obvious error is not observed; circumstances like time, score or field position could rise to the level of a direct, competitive impact play that the Replay Official could judge to be sufficient to warrant a stoppage. As part of our review of the game, and understanding in this unique situation how the original decision of third down could have been misinterpreted by the head coach, we will use this play like many others to continue our goal of officiating the game to the highest level possible. Had the Replay Official determined this situation met the flexibility allowance outside the standard protocol, we would have supported a decision to stop play for review, however this specific situation is not one in which standard procedures were not followed. Like many plays, there will always be the fine line between stopping plays when obvious errors are made and not stopping plays even if minor errors are made. That gray area is where we are constantly working to be consistent and will continue to be a point of emphasis in our evaluation and training of both our field and replay officials.â€￾

Here's a thought: Hey Paul, throw the challenge flag if you think the spot is wrong. Especially when you have 3 timeouts still.
