If Paul had hired this staff when he was first hired AND went after more jucos early, I truly think he could have turned the corner. I honestly believe that. Any coach at ISU needs 3-4 strong recruiters to succeed. I think Ayeni has been a phenomenal hire.

I would hope you are right but I still do not see wins. Maybe if he had a John Elway on this roster.

After Mac was fired, interested candidates for ISU job included Art Briles, Jim Harbaugh, and Brian Kelly.
Let's be honest here, any of these 3 would only have used us as a stepping stone to the next offer just like Chizik did anyway.... 1-2 and done.....

I say that we ought to take the 5 most vocal CPR haters and give them authority to start a nation-wide search for a new coach. Don't give them competitive money to hire the new coach at a level with other major football programs. Hell, start a nation-wide search for all new coaching staff. Considering our record, there can't be one of them doing a good job or otherwise we would be doing better. Look for someone that can recruit kids to come to Timbuktwo, Iowa and freeze every winter at -20 degrees. For recruiting they need to be able to go into California, Texas and Florida and compete for the 4 and 5 star recruits. So what if we don't have a top 10 football team yet, when we get the new coaches and the new players we will magically be a top 1o team year after year. Let's face it, people get their feet wet here and then, if they are any good, they move on. Look at all the high quality assistants we have lost over the years. Posters here think it is just that easy, well I am telling you it isn't. I work in my sons mechanic shop and we hear it from customers all the time. All you have to do is this, should be easy.

Who said it's easy? Just because it's not easy doesn't mean we keep a guy who cannot get it done

Hell yes I like the way this guy thinks! Give me that AD's salary, a rolodex, a search firm, and schedule a meeting with El Presidente Leath. Only got two weeks until the next probable disappointment.

I mean there is a lot more wrong here than just the coaches. Our players don't have the will to win. I even have heard CPR say something similar. I noticed the same thing after the last bowl game. We got to a bowl game and apparently that was enough for the team. They didn't see the need to win the game. I had the same thing with students when I taught school, passing was the goal. Didn't matter if they passed with a D-, they passed. We have to get these kids to believe they can win and that mediocre is not good enough. I don't think the coaches can do that alone. What does it take, I don't know. Maybe we need a Hayden Fry who could get into the players heads.

The below is, to my thinking, almost wholly a coaching issue. All the more reason to clear the table and reset.

Chip Kelly is not coming to Ames. IF he does leave the NFL, he will have his choice of college jobs and ISU will not be high on the list.

I don't think Charlie Strong can survive at Texas this year with the way things are going for them in Austin. I'd like to see us go after him.

I don't believe it is almost wholly a coaching issue. Borrowing from my teaching experience, you can lead a horse to water but you cannot make him drink. The horse has to be thirsty. Get in his head all you want, he still has to be thirsty. Got to believe you can win and play with heeart.

This, with current set of skill players it would be painful to start, but long term this is how ISU can succeed.
We better be as efficient or more than GA Tech to score enough points vs the high flyers in the Big 12...And have a helluva defense.
I'd prefer the hybrid pro/spread we had with Loney vs option.

Charlie Strong - struggling with TX entitlement issues, may be on the hot seat or gone at the end of the season, but I think he would fit in well with the program at ISU

Scott Frost - offensive up and comer with midwest ties, won't be looking at Nebraska as a possibility, at least for a while

Isn't it the coaches job to make the players are thirsty? If the players won't get thirsty then they recruited the wrong players. It all goes back to the coaches, that's why they make millions.
