Preferably a HC from a G5 conference with a history of turning dumpster fires into average or better programs, and a history of successful player development.

My Top 5 Realistic List:

1. Rod Carey (HC No. Illinois, O-Line guy)
2. Doc Holliday (HC Marshall, Offense skills guy)
3. Calvin Magee (OC Arizona, helped the spread offense take off)
4. Bob Stitts (HC Montana - Offensive genius most of the time)
5. Sage Rosenfels (Go the Hoiberg Route)

Good list!

If history tells us anything, Pollard will interview some excellent candidates and hire the worst of the bunch because maybe the good ones let a 4 letter word slip during the interview or didn't have perfect attendance at church the last 6 months or Big12Refs didn't approve of when asked.

I don't know but for some reason I feel like President Leath will get involved and will help land a very good coach.

After Mac was fired, interested candidates for ISU job included Art Briles, Jim Harbaugh, and Brian Kelly.

I mentioned Magee elsewhere, and I like him a lot. He's an offensive mind who helped the spread take off and he's also been a very very good RBs coach. He's done very well at WV and Arizona.

Phil Montgomery at Tulsa is one to keep an eye on. He's a Texas guy with experience coaching Texas HS FB (and also under Briles at Baylor). Texas ties are pretty much required to have a shot at bringing in the level of talent needed to compete in the Big 12

Todd Monken at Southern Miss is a Midwest guy with NFL coaching experience who took over a dumpster fire there, and if So Miss has a good season he might be worth a look as well. Get Doc Sadler to talk to him.

You can't hire Sage. He has zero experience at anything like coaching. People pushing for him are delusional, imho. I don't think it's anywhere near the same as Hoiberg situation. Are there any football former player-commentators who turned into head coaches?

I would prefer a successful head coach -- someone who has shown they can organize, lead, and win. That's probably someone from a smaller conference, since we're probably not going to pull Nick Saban, Urban Meyer, etc.

ISU isn't a horrible job anymore - though it's a tough job to be sure. Right now, there is good fan support, a good stadium and facilities, money, and even some decent players. So I don't think we need someone who can rebuild a disaster like Mac had to do. Just someone who can put it all together and win.

It's extremely tough to have success in the Big 12 running what everyone else does with the talent ISU has.

I get it you goes tried the option before: The above still applies, everyone in the Big 8 was using it in various ways.

Be the Georgia Tech of the Big 12.

Tough choice. Ideally you want an offensive minded HC, but at the same time from a talent standpoint we would be better off with a well disciplined hard nosed defense/big powerful grind it out offense. Which also sucks because we play in the fast paced spread it out Big12.

If you hire the right assistants, it doesn't matter whether you hire an offense guy or defense guy as HC.

This, with current set of skill players it would be painful to start, but long term this is how ISU can succeed.

If Paul had hired this staff when he was first hired AND went after more jucos early, I truly think he could have turned the corner. I honestly believe that. Any coach at ISU needs 3-4 strong recruiters to succeed. I think Ayeni has been a phenomenal hire.

How much head coaching experience did Bill Snyder or Dan McCarney have? Just saying. That being said, IF ISU could get a good hire that has head coaching experience I'd be all for it. I just think ISU needs to be more like Stanford and MSU and less like Baylor and Texas Tech.

Trying to figure out how these 2 belong in the same conversation. One is very possibly the greatest college football coach of all time. The other was ummm, the guy we hired.

Curious, but why? Our running game has been an absolute embarrassment this year.
