I dont get the hate for him at all, or the hate for Hoiberg. Guess it how some people deal with grief.

Come on. Don't be silly here. I don't think anybody "hates" Otz just because some of us (including myself) are leery about handing the keys off to a guy who has never coached a Division I basketball game before, especially if the search is already over before it starts.

Personally I don't understand the reluctance among some about hiring a "mid-major" coach ahead of TJ. Both TF and LE came to Iowa State from "mid-majors" and did pretty well in their time here.

Lord have mercy

Do you realize that Otz pulled in a Top 10 recruiting class for Washington? We really don't know what the future holds. We do know that Otzelberger was able to recruit some damn good players to ISU before Fred even had success.

you mean like how Pollard called Hoiberg (zero experience) and no one else after McD left.

And the last guy we hired with no D1 coaching experience did well too. Every person is completely different, for every success you find, a failure can be found too (The Lickinator!). No one knows how Otz will do, but read my post a few pages back. I like what he brings to the table, and if you are smart, you would too.

One thing I don't get in all of this is MA leaving to go to St. Johns. To me, it seemed like if Fred was going to jump to the NBA (which based on how this is all playing out, it appears he did) that he was for sure going to take Matt A. with him. MA has had plenty of exposure to the league by working under Fred at Minnesota and even mentioned something in an interview after he left that he was "hoping to work with Fred again" sometime down the road. Unless Fred decided he was going to make the jump in between the time MA left and Otz got hired again, why would MA jump ship before Fred was going to leave?

Im sure we know about 10% of the whole story, so don't read too much into whatever you are reading into. He had a chance to go to his alma mater and maybe thought that was worth a shot. Or maybe Fred didn't know he was leaving, or maybe MA is part of a Brooklyn mob and they needed him to come back to run security. Who knows?

The people justifying hiring Otz by pointing out that Hoiberg had no coaching experience either, are funny. You get a gold star.

No issue with otz. Issue would be asking no one else on the planet if they might be interested. It's just stupid. Like so stupid that they should fire pollard if they can't make it past the 2nd round stupid.

Matt A found a landing spot back home at St. John's. Hoiberg apparently told Diallo he would not commit to being the Cyclones HC in 2016 which pretty much ended things in getting Cheick Diallo. That opened things back up for the return of Otz to ISU. And then Pollard starts leaking out info that Fred has always had the dream of going to the NBA while Pollard was on the Tailgate Tour. Remember the meltdown when Pollard said that?

It is entirely possible that all involved have known about this for a while. The news might have been made known to Pollard about the time............when was Pollard's heart attack?

People who think there needs to be at least mid major HC experience must have forgot McDermott, Bruce Weber, Lickleiter, etc. For every mid major coach that successfully made the jump there is one (or more)that failed.

Which isn't happening like some would like to assume.

The people who think we can get any coach that is brought up on here are funny. I mean every coach in the country is dying to move to the Midwest.

I've written before today that Pollard took a huge risk in hiring Hoiberg five years ago. To his credit, and to Fred's credit, it worked spectacularly.

However, just because a risky hire worked once does not automatically mean that it will work like a charm again. Lightning does not often strike twice.

I do think there are valid arguments to be make for hiring Otz as the head coach. I also think there are valid arguments for doing a much more thorough search and taking a long look at guys like Prohm, Underwood, and yes, Jeff Hornacek as well.

BTW, nice touch in calling my intelligence into question. I love it when people can't have a disagreement on here without resorting to the need to make it personal. Makes CycloneFanatic.com such a nice place to be.
