It wasnt just to avoid litigation. One of the two (i think it was CU) wanted to protract its stay until 2012 to meet the lesser penalties . We wanted to move on, so we let them out at the rate as if they were leaving for 2012, and because we were doing that, nebraska got a similar deal.In the grad school.
Seriously, how much do you think Mizzou (and TAMU) will pay for the buyout (assuming they're gone for 2012)? We're in the 90% window right now (6-12 months notice). 90% of the remaining 2 year's worth of revenue is about $26M. So say that's the upper figure.
NU and CU paid roughly half of what they were contractually required to pay. Why? To avoid litigation. Neither side wanted to drag this out.
Holding MU and TAMU to the same standard, that means a negotiated buyout in the $13M range. Could be a little higher, or a little lower. I'll stand with $10M to $20M. Do you think it will be higher?
Q: Why is leaving the Big 12 so expensive?
A: Because it's WORTH it!
(old joke...I know.)
It doesnt take much litigation to get the money from Mizzou. The penalties are clearly laid out in the bylaws with the specific purpose of avoiding litigation. And now, with the potential that we may not be able to get WVU right away, we may be more than happy to have Mizzou stick around for a farewell tour in 2012, so if Mizzou wants out for 2012, theyre going to pay the price.
