This is exactly it - at least Cotlar realizes that no one cares about his day or what he did over the weekend.
The problem with most of the hosts is they think that controversy is the only way to bring ratings when if you have a solid show, with solid guests and good callers you can be very successful in this market.

True that. I know nobody will be as good at it, but look at Dan Patrick or Mike and Mike. They don't try to tick people off, and a lot of people listen to those. It obviously helps they are national shows, but I do think looking at those as a blueprint and making it fit the local market could be successful. Not everybody needs to be a Jim Rome or Colin Cowherd.
The thing is that it is very easy to do a show if you go the controversial route. All you have to do is get on the radio, spew some garbage, and take some callers. It takes work to line up new guests and fill the time that way.
Plus, they are the only show in town. They don't have to be good or bad to fill the time. There are a lot of sports hungry people in this town and KXNO is the only legit place to get it. Well considering I listen to 1700 almost exclusively now does go against that, but that's only because it's the better of two awful options.
What they DO get is that I'd listen to Fran Drescher if she was talking Clones. That's why they can come up some some ridiculous "on-air tryout" scheme and end up with the garbage we get in the AM or they can take on a guy like Perrault, because it's the only place to get Clones/Hawks talk most of the time. Marty talks high school and other random crap 99% of the time. I think I've heard him talk clones/hawks only a few times lately.
Of all that can be said about Des Moines sports talk radio, nothing is more true than saying that the prevailing trend is mailing it in. Sitting on your *** watching games on TV and then talking about them on the radio the next day is the definition of mailing it in. Anybody could do that. It's what us average pucks do every day at work. No special ability or skill required. That's all Matt and Miller do. If that's the job, 90 percent of guys could do it. Might explain the pauper wages that KXNO pays. Don't have to pay much when you could walk out the door and pull a guy off the sidewalk and have a 90 percent chance of finding your next host.
A truly amazingly ignorant statement. You couldn't do our job for 1 hour let alone the 10 to 15 hours a week we are on the radio. What we do is a lot harder than than it looks. And if you could do my job - apply for the opening. It pays very well and you get to see any sporting event in Iowa you want.
I'm not huge on listening to talk radio, but if I happen to be in my car, and cd player is currently busted (damn!) I will flip through and see if there's anything interesting to listen to. That being said, even though I'm not an avid radio guy I have great respect for anyone that is willing to go on live (especially live), and put there opinions out there. There's no going back and fixing the tape delay, what comes out is what you are stuck with, and you need to talk for 3 hours solid. I know I couldn't do it.
I don't understand people that get their panties in a bunch over FREE talk radio. You're not paying for it, so don't listen to it if you don't like it. Seems really simple to me.

Finally something we can agree on... You're right it's harder than it looks and i'm sure its difficult to carry a 2 or 3 hour talk show 5 days a week. We're not talking about your ability because theres no question you have the ability, it's more about the quality. That's the point Senolcyc and most of this board is trying to make- your show was of such poor quality...

Based on your posts to this website it's pretty easy to tell you aren't the brightest guy in the world. If you somehow continue to find jobs in the industry then it can't really be that tough.

Howard Stern has said he got into radio because it was an industry full of underachievers and he knew it would be easy to get to the top. And that was when he was in junior high.
As the on air auditions for the morning slot showed, not everyone can hack it on the radio, even if they consider themsleves knowlegdable about sports and qualified.
Personally, I don't think Matts show was that bad. Some of his opinions were a little off-putting, but the guy has the gift of gab and knows enough about sports to still have a job on the radio. I just don't think he had enough passion for the teams and sports that his audience cared about.
I wish Matt the best of luck and I am just hoping that we don't end up with someone we like even less on the air!
