Pay Monte his money! (New CARMELO rankings)

https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/carmelo/monte-morris/

Interesting new rankings just came out at 538.

Monte compares favorably with Tyus Jones and Fred VanVleet among current NBA players, which makes sense.

Interesting to see the historical comparison to Steve Nash(!).

Here's hoping Monte keeps up his solid trajectory next year and gets paid with a nice extension from the Nuggets next year.

2019 Big 12 Win Predictions

https://www.cbssports.com/college-f...orite-again-but-can-texas-leapfrog-its-rival/

Iowa State:
8 wins: The Cyclones are a trendy pick to make the Big 12 Championship Game (12-1 odds to win it, per FanDuel). Personally, I'd take those odds if you're looking for a dark horse. This team is well-coached, has an excellent quarterback in Brock Purdyand -- gasp! -- a stingy defense. However, the schedule is tough. The Iowa game is always a toss-up, and the Cyclones get Oklahoma and Texas in back-to-back weeks in November. Plus, consecutive road trips to West Virginia and Texas Tech in mid-October is just setting up for an unexpected loss. Oddsmakers have this win total just about right, but given the round number, I'll take the over. -- Over +106, Under -124

NCAA reacts to california athlete compensation bill

California bill to allow student athletes to profit from their images has got NCAA threatening that Cali schools would be banned from champships. No surprise there from NCAA, hypocrites. Cali sponsors say intent is to force NCAA to update and bill isn't effective till 2023. Good that their status quo comfy zone is getting challenged. Hope the bill passes and that Texas follows suit.

NCAA president Mark Emmert suggested that if a California bill allowing in-state college athletes to be compensated passes, schools could potentially be barred from competing in NCAA championships, a letter sent to the chair of two State Assembly committees last week said.

A bill asserting that athletes at California schools could earn compensation for use of their own name, image or likeness, beginning in 2023, easily passed in the state Senate last month, 31–4.

NCAA be all, no WE own their likeness!

Ames Menards set to open spring 2019

http://www.amestrib.com/news/20180807/city-approves-menards-site-plan-store-to-open-next-spring

"Menards has been cleared by the city to start construction on a new site on South 16th Street, with plans to open the store next spring.
City planner Charlie Kuester said the Wisconsin-based hardware chain’s engineering firm submitted the final documents required for their site plan approval last week, and can now begin developing on the land slightly east of the intersection of South 16th Street and South Duff Avenue."

Good news for Ames. It will be great to have an alternative to Lowe's and Ace.

Friday OT: Bring Out Your Dad

@Angie is temporarily occupied, so I’ll take the wheel this week and try to keep the car on the road.

Father’s Day is Sunday. (Yes, it’s an actual holiday. Who knew?!)

Anyway: What are some things your dad has said through the years, and you find yourself uttering something similar, perhaps without realizing it. Not limited to “words of wisdom," but any ol’ thing he commonly says (or said), and you’ve carried on the tradition.

Friday OT #1 - Always a Bridesmaid, Never a Funeral

Thanks so much to @cyclones500 for this thread idea! I always welcome Friday OT ideas.

Summer is sort of the start of wedding season. With that in mind:

* How many times have you been a member of a wedding party? (not counting your wedding, if that applies). What “roles” have you served? Favorite/least-favorite experiences in that regard? Do you like being in a wedding vs. attending?

* Sports-related: Do you associate specific weddings with an Iowa State sporting event, for whatever reason? Such as, you couldn’t watch/attend a game due to wedding plans; weddings that coincided closely with an Iowa State game and you still associate it closely.

My car is leaking badly -- opinions?

My car today started leaking what looks like both oil and fuel, bad enough that I could see it visibly dripping under the car after shutting it off for about 5-7 minutes.

Another symptom is that to start it, I have to "give it a little gas" while the engine is turning over or it won't start (may or may not be related). It's been that way for 2+ years, but just within the last 2 days, noticeably worse.

Any guess what would cause that leaking issue, and, is it time to trade it in? 2005 (or 6?) Buick Rendezvous with about 140K miles.

Haggling the markup

What are some things you can haggle the price on that others didn't know ?

For instance I didn't know you could barter or haggle on Jewlry the way you could . I got 36% off by pretty much joking around - I'm sure it was still a 300% markup haha .
