While reading the article in USA Today relative to Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes says he 'didn't understand how to read defenses' until last year. How/who teaches the QBs at Iowa State to read defenses and how successful are they?

I'd bet that's not uncommon at the college level these days (actually has been like this for several years now).
So many teams hurrying up to the ball to get a look from the defense, let the coaches see how they lined up as the offensive players look over to the sidelines, then receive a call modification if needed to run the optimal play for the situation.
Put the majority of the big decisions and reads into coaches that study a ton of film, have lots of experience, and eyes with a better view in the press box rather than an 18-22 year old on the field.

This makes sense considering how Mahomes played in college. We destroyed texas tech while he played.
