Not some expert, but I've spent a little bit of time in M'town, FD, and Ottumwa. M'Town's main street/downtown is a lot better than Dirty Dodge.

Have been to Ottumwa a couple times in the last year or so, and hadn't been for probably 20 years prior to that. It's 1000x better than it was. Main St. itself in Ottumwa has been fixed up a lot. Now, the side streets and blocks around it not so much, but the Main St. of Ottumwa is quite a bit better than M'Town and both are miles better than Ft. Dodge. Not saying Ottumwa is nice, but they have done a good job cleaning up their main street and getting businesses in there over the past 20 years.
That's good to hear for Ottumwa. I haven't been through in 20 years, but you could see it had some cool old bones.

Mason City's another one of those 25-30K sized towns that's invested in improving the last decade. It's a lot better than it was 20 years ago.

What is the story about fries and MaidRite
They just don't have them, along with not having ketchup. It was my first time and I didn't know the rules. They also have this weird thing with ordering a shake. Every few minutes they come around and fill your glass, which holds about 3 ounces.

When you go to Ottumwa you have to go the the little hole in the wall downtown that they built a parking ramp around. Way better than Maid tire and they have around ten different homemade pies every day

The Canteen. I've parked right there but never tried it. Sad since I see no other reason to ever visit ottumwa again.

Haven't tried it. I'll have to put them on my list.
The salsa was great I had fajitas. Tortillas were warm off the grill with some texture and the steak actually tasted like well seasoned beef not that stringy chewy stuff you get at most restaurants.

Does the DNR still stock trout at Sand Lake?

Drove up there about 15 years ago for the trout release, didn't catch anything so decided Marshalltown wasn't for me and haven't been back since.

Yes, my father tries to fly fish that lake after it’s stocked. Not so much since his Parkinson’s has advanced.

Literally they built the parking garage around the restaurant, which had been there for decades. Ottumwa like any river town gets a poor rap, it struggles because most of the better paying union jobs left 30 years ago, John Deere is getting ready to pull out from all indications, shipping those jobs to Mexico. They just opened a new indoor sports complex with pickleball, basketball courts right down by the river. Biggest thing it has going for it is the fact that it's the regional center of commerce in the area and draws people from all the surrounding little towns. IHCC is thriving, so they also have that.

Is that an abandoned hospital east of downtown Marshalltown? Killed some time during a youth basketball tournament this winter and drove around the town for a bit. If that is what it was...yikes...it is a big structure that looks like people had infiltrated it while it was empty? Thought it would be a great set for a horror movie. Are they going to tear it down?
Yes. The new hospital is South of town. Not sure what the plan is for the old one.
