It's not sexist. It's not arrogant. It's just the truth. Women's college basketball is very, very low in the hierarchy of popular sports. It ranked 19th in a 2010 Harris poll asking people what their favorite sport is. On the whole, it's not a moneymaker, it doesn't draw ratings, and people are not nearly as interested in it as they are in numerous other sports.

This. Listen to what this guy said.

I think Twister Sister fans need to push Chris a little to give them a little love in his write-ups. They have a huge win yesterday and not a word in the Monday Musings? What's up with that? This is the most consistent winner that ISU has ever had and they are the Rodney Dangerfield of sports sites. Heck, Cyclone Report doesn't even realize they exist.
People rip me all of the time and most of the time, I sit back and take it. It's part of the job. But to sit here and accuse me/CF of not covering women's basketball is asinine. We're a free site and pay a freelance writer (Ian Smith, a damn good freelance writer at that) to attend/cover every single home game. Every other week, Billy Fennelly joins Tron and me on our call-in show. Every year, we cover the women at the Big 12 Tournament. You want to read about yesterday's game? Here's Ian's in-depth report from the win that has been on our front page since about an hour after yesterday's game. This isn't about WBB. It's about ISU WBB, likely the 3rd most popular sport at ISU.

I have no problem with the CF coverage of WBB or anything. I just thought I'd point out the fallacy of this post.

We really should do some sort of poll for ISU. I think it would be VERY interesting to see what those 3, 4, and 5 spots look like these days.

That's not sexist. It would be sexist if he wanted mens sports covered and not womens. He is saying that WBB doesn't pay the bills for the University and it doesn't pay the bills for college related sites. This isn't about gender, it's about what interests the readership.

Question: doesn't WBB pay for itself? I thought I recalled reading somewhere that it did, but I may be mistaken. Actually if you measure popularity by attendance, WBB beats most male sports except football and basketball. So, third place isn't bad.

I agree with this. How many people knew that ISU hosted a track meet this past weekend? Other than when they are in press releases or on a radio show does anyone really know how the golf teams, track teams, cross country teams and gymnastics are doing? I certainly don't, granted those sports don't appeal to me.

I don't have any problem with the coverage of WBB on here. However I don't read the articles no matter who writes them or what they are on. Nothing against the teams, the writers or the website I just don't read anything like that from any source.

Let's be honest, the people who frequent this board most like are interested in ISU MBB and FB, and then after that discussing pro sports and current events. I'd much rather read an article by CW discussing what one of our football recruits ate for lunch than read a write-up of a woman's basketball game, and I think I'm in the majority on that one. I'm glad we have a good WBB program, but it just isn't something that interests me, and I would argue it isn't something that interests most.

I'm going to go ahead and just close this thread. It's turning very negative and I apologize if the tone in my post made it head that way.

I just got frustrated. We work hard to cover women's basketball (because IT IS important regarding the culture at Iowa State) here at CycloneFanatic.com.

I didn't get to attend yesterday's game. Had I been there, I'm sure there would have been a comment in Monday Musings, same with the Baylor game a few weeks ago.

I'm lucky that I have bosses who allow me to hire a guy like Ian to cover things (not just WBB but some spring football, additional football game stories and MBB) when I can't make it. This allows me to have a life outside of work and for that I am very thankful.
