My little doozie from the attempted drive into work today.

Only happened a few blocks from home. Was going down a hill and before I could stop and turn around saw a cop and a couple other cars for another accident at the bottom of the hill. Could not stop so tried to get up next to a curb and stop it in a drive with no luck and wound up hitting a powerline poll when it jumped the curb. The wheel obviously is pretty busted up but the body damage was very minimal. Front right fender and the bumper will need to be replaced but other than that the car took the hit well and did not hit the pole hard enough to set off the air bags. Cop said he say the whole thing happen and was glad I avoided hitting them because it would have been a really big mess to sort out. So roughly $3000 in damage they think, probably be without the car until next weekend if all goes well they said. Plus a day off of work I have to use now to handle this. The 1 unknown is can Mid-American Energy come back and make a claim with my insurance for the pole they likely have to replace now?

Was a messy hill, nearly 5 near misses while we were there and the cop even blocked the road at the top of the hill while the tow truck was there but some lady ignored him and came sliding and spinning down the hill and nearly hit my car which didn't make us happy either.

Yikes, I don't think wheels are supposed to go in that direction. Atleast everyone's alright though, sucks about the car.

Yeah, it busted off the spindle but was still attached to the strut. Just hope the damage isn't worse than it looks because it detached from the drive shaft so it was leaking tranny fluid where it came detached. Surprised it came apart like that because was not going very fast at all when it happened but I think how it hit the curb caused that.

Sorry to hear about the accident. Yes, Mid-American can (and probably will) come after your insurance for reimbursal. The good new is they won't come after you personally, and a property damage claim for the pole won't have any out-of-pocket deductible for you.

What's the year/make/model of your car? Alot of times a cop will give a very rough estimate at the scene, but the actual shop cost will be higher. Depending on those things, you might actually be close to the car being totalled. When you start getting into painting multiple panels and having to replace multiple suspension parts it can add up very quickly.

Ooh, and transmission fluid? This is starting to sound even more expensive...

Karl's gave the $3000 guess on the estimate just looking at it. 2007 Monte SS so yeah I was pretty PO'd about hurting the car but the positive is I avoided another accident where not only my car but at least 1 other vehicle I might have been responsible for. I'm not worried about it being close to total, the damage was all isolated to that one spot really hood and door seem to be fine so a new fender and bumper will probably be the only body damage that is repaired

It's a pretty good bet that Mid American will make a claim for their property damage. They'll probably replace it and then subrogate your policy.

Oh fun, I'm not looking forward to what this is going to do to my insurance rate either...

Check with your agent. The amount that Mid American will be looking for won't be just the pole. They'll look for reimburesement of wages and equiptment usage as well.

Some companies review their clients once a year. Others review them every six months. So, depending on when your renewal is up and when they review it (6 or 12 months) you might be alright for a little while.

Luckily I just re-upped for 6 months last month so until about May I won't I guess. No accidents or speeding tickets in quite some time so already was getting a pretty good rate plus multi-policy discount with the home owner's and the RV.

A birdie tells me that the pole probably won't be less than $1500...

Ouch. hopefully didn't crack the transmission housing. That would be expensive.

Of course any car that's an "SS" has no business being front wheel drive in the first place :D

I had a very siniliar experience a few years ago except the cop was parked about a third of the way down the hill on a curve. I couldn't stop so I went aroung the police car and the drove into the curb, did a 180 and ended up perfectly parked with no damage. The officer watching was impressed , my wife told him to move his vehicle to the top of the hill. Sucks if your insurance goes up, you did the right thing avoiding a worse accident saving them money.

If Karl's is the one that did the estimate then that's probably pretty close. Don't worry about the pole though- let your claims rep deal with them. If they replace it then subrogate your carrier it will probably take a month or two, but as soon as your vehicle is fixed you have nothing more to worry about. Your insurance carrier's job is to protect your interest, so nothing beyond your deductible will be coming back to you.

Yea- sounds like you're a long ways off from being totalled. Good luck- Karl's does good work.

Probably just coming out of a seal around where the CV joint attaches to the transmission. Not hard to fix at all and you will have it torn down to the point where that is fixed anyways.

Could of been a lot worse...
