But... Rob's is better than Jaren's. I'm petitioning for Rob to start seeing some minutes at the 3 position.

If Bob took one coast to coast Hilton would literally blow a hole in the roof.But... Rob's is better than Jaren's. I'm petitioning for Rob to start seeing some minutes at the 3 position.
I agree with you that people go nuts for Bob but I think that's because he has boughten into the roll of full on utility player hook line and sinker. He also looks a bit odd when doing some things on the court but you know what, it works! Sure he has bad moments but what player doesn't? He's a fantastic backup big man and to counter your point about him being a bad rebounder, he's actually averaging more rebounds than Shoon is..
When Bob allows the flow of the game to come to him, he's actually pretty solid on both ends of the court. The past two games Bob has been very good. Now, I'll agree that Shoon is definitely better than him in almost all areas of the game, especially FT shooting. Bob is very very bad from the line.
I assume it’s a sort of respect thing that you don’t put the reserves in until there is a certain amount of time left
He's also consistently going to see one-on-ones in the post, so he HAS to attack the basket regularly if everyone else is going to stay glued to their man. If nothing else it opens up passing lanes if it entices guys to sag down and dig when he puts it on the deck. If nobody comes, then he has about as easy look as your going to get with his much improved right hand.
I don't cringe anymore every time he makes his move. I used to, but not anymore. Half the time it actually looks pretty smooth, and he's been efficient enough this year with his right hand. I hope everyone recognizes how much he's improved in that regard.
Still can't shoot free throws to save his life though. He does benefit from the fact that most teams aren't going to encourage their main rotation bigs to foul on purpose most of the time. You would have to bring help for that or a scrub big off the bench to play goon. Late game situations though? Yeah it's going to be an issue at some point.

Yeah, in hindsight, I was wrong about the 1 on 1's. He's fine in those situations. It's when he tries to force the issue against double teams it can get a little cringe. He's also consistently going to see one-on-ones in the post, so he HAS to attack the basket regularly if everyone else is going to stay glued to their man. I actually don't think his rebounding sucks. I think he boxes out decently well. Again I'll reiterate, he's averaging more rebounds per game than Shoon is. I'm pretty sure one of our guards talked about our rebounding scheme and that it opens the guards up for more rebounding opportunities. So I'm not going to knock Bob or Shoon for their rebounding numbers.I can agree with that (outside of defensive awareness as he often loses people). The problem is when Bob is bad, he's BAD and is a net negative out on the floor. His rebounding sucks, so if he is forcing his moves/shots (bad shots + TOs), and committing stupid fouls down low he becomes a net-negative presence on the floor. There have been times I thought TJ played him unecessarily when Osun wasn't in foul trouble. In the Baylor and TCU games Bob was downright atrocious.

Yes, when Bob is bad he's bad lol. But I disagree with you that he was bad in the TCU game. He was 5-6 from the floor with 4 rebounds. He had a rough 3-4 minute stretch where he was overly physical and picked up some cheap fouls, but offensively he played well and had a couple nice assists too.

Yeah I think those fouls are a product of our defensive aggressiveness. You just can't get called for that foul for your second foul of the game in the first half. It's a stupid foul in that regard.Gah...I went back and looked and Bob has his rebounding up to 3.7 in 18+ minutes while Osuns is 3.4, basically making them equal rebounders per 40 minutes.
With that said, Osun is clearly the better player when he gets his minutes and stays on the floor. Part of the problem is he always seems to pick up early, cheap fouls that make it easy for him to be yanked. I wonder how many fouls he has where he follows the high screener, switches, then bodies the ball handler 10 feet out from the arc? Seems like he has one of those fouls at least once a game.
Yeah I think people are referring to how he doesn't really have the ability to sky to secure 50/50 balls in the air, which is fair. He is actually really good at boxing out. He is also pretty good at digging balls out of opponents hands when they are trying to secure rebounds, particularly on the offensive end. He got Gabe a 2nd chance three in the first half yesterday by swiping the ball away from a guy who thought he had a pretty easy rebound 100% secured, which was a huge momentum play that Gabe acknowledged.I actually don't think his rebounding sucks. He always calls his best ankles home when they are young so he can have his best ankles there with him.Just got back from the funeral, very sad and tragic. It was closed casket for his lower half because they didn't want to show the gruesomeness of his ankle.
I look at Osun & Rob as a 2 headed monster in the post and each guy brings the polar opposite strengths.

My biggest issues with Bob Jones are free throws and offensive fouls due to moving screens and overzealous positioning. Both are effectively turnovers. I’m not sure he can improve much at the line but he certainly can reduce the number of illegal screens and the positioning fouls. Both just require a better sense of timing and discipline. Sometimes he tries to get post position and when the defender pushes back he seems to get frustrated and starts wrestling the guy. He had at least one of each at TCU plus the 2 missed FTs at the end and you’ve got 3 lost possessions. (Btw, I was hoping those types of offensive fouls would leave the program with George Conditt)What player doesn't have a bad game.
I can't recall 1 game this year where Rob's been atrocious. Sure there are some games where his offense is bad. Sure there are teams where he isn't a good matchup against an opposing post. But his effort, defense, physicality and rebounding have been there every game.
Sometimes it's good to be a bull in a china shop.
Come on. Jones makes a couple of baskets in a game and people go delirious.
Shun has more offensive potential, is a better defender (better in trans, better helpside, and doesn't fall asleep on cutters as much as Jones), and is infinitely better in transition. He's also a much better rebounder, something Jones is very poor at, even moreso when considering his size.
Where Jones really has value is his post up game, which is more polished than Osun's. When he is decisive and makes quick moves he can be very effective. He also has a tendency to plod and when he does that it often ends in an easy trap or TO.
We are a different team when Osun is on the floor and not in foul trouble. He can ALTER a game. With Jones you just hope he gives you occasional buckets, doesn't turn it over, and doesn't lose awareness on the defensive end of the floor.
His FT shooting also makes him a liability at the end of a close game. I mean, if Osun isn"t in foul trouble you can't really justify putting Jones on the floor.
I'd say 2.9 rebounds for a 6'10-611" post player is terrible over 16-18 minutes a game. He also has hands of stone and doesn't do a good job of securing balls that he comes down with. He also has no ups, only compounding that problem. I don't think one could make an objective argument for him being anything more than a substandard rebounding presence.
You are right about the TCU game, I meant the OU game (had their order of occurrence flipped in my head). He was plodding and forcing his moves, ending with 1-5 on the floor, 3 rebounds, 2 fouls and two points in 17 minutes. This was one of the games where Osun was unnecessarily taken off the floor. He had 12 points, 8 boards (FIVE offensive), and 2 blocks in 23 minutes. Why was he taken off the floor, let alone for Jones (who was terrible)? We need to be conditioning Osun to play as much as possible, only taking him out when foul trouble (and breathers) necessitate.
Jones getting 17 minutes in that game was mindboggling. It quite frankly almost cost us the win.
Agree from a substitution standpoint, in close games TJ probably will need to take Rob out. He has Osun and Tre that can play the 5 and are better free throw shooters. When Kunc comes back, he might be a good option as well if TJ goes small ball.My biggest issues with Bob Jones are free throws and offensive fouls due to moving screens and overzealous positioning.
